Rangi and Papa were the original ancestors in Maori creation stories, representing heaven and earth. They were originally locked in a close embrace, shrouding the world in darkness. Their six sons worked to separate Rangi and Papa to allow light into the world: Tane-mahuta created forests; Haumia-tikitiki created uncultivated food; Tawhiri-ma-tea created winds and storms; Tu-matauenga created humanity; and Rongo-ma-ta cultivated food.
