Characters – conventions and inspiration
Character 1 Elizabeth Adversus
Based Upon… ‘The Exorcism of Emily Rose’s’ main character was called Emily Rose – A very girly, innocent name, so gives the character a sense of innocence. Based on previous supernatural horror films we had watched, The Exorcism of Emily Rose and The Last Exorcism both had their main character in nightdresses, they also both had long wavy hair, always left down. ‘The Last Exorcism’s’ main character was called Nell Sweetzer – A very girly, innocent name, so gives the character a sense of innocence.
Comparison… Long, wavy hair Nightdress/ Plain Pyjamas Basic features – including cuts and bruises
Costume… We wanted to get the outfit for the processed girl just right as she would be most on show within the film. Although we liked the whole use of the nightdress idea, the cost for it – as we found the perfect one, was far too much. We went for the simple pyjama set look as it looked a lot more modern and would blend in with the modern feel of the film that the trailer will portray The nightdresses gave a sense of innocence to the girls. It was also a simple look to pull off and could be made to look a lot creepier with the help of some makeup and hair styling
Make-up… Make up is a big necessity when creating our trailer. Like in the other two films, we need our main character to look battered and bruised which will involve cuts and bruises and dirt being created through the use of make up on her face and arms. Hair will also need to be backcombed to make it look messy and unclean Make-up test
Name inspiration… Elizabeth - It is of Hebrew origin, and the meaning of Elizabeth is "God'spromise; God is my oath“ We thought the meaning of this name was ironic due to that she gets possessed by the devil, whereas her name meaning is meant that ‘god is suppose to protect her’
Name inspiration… Adversus – Latin word for ‘facing’, ‘opposing’, ‘opposite’ We thought that having the girls surname in Latin would give the film a twist as the meaning of the word wouldn’t stand out straight away, only once researched. The meaning of ‘adversus’ were very ironic, as with her religion she is very anti-devil, until that is, she gets possessed.
Character 1 Father Anarchy
Based Upon… ‘The Exorcism of Emily Rose’s’ other main character was called Father Moore– A very traditional priest name which helps his character stand out. The two previous supernatural horrors we looked at, The Exorcism of Emily Rose and The Last Exorcism, portrayed their priests in completely different costumes. Within The Exorcism of Emily Rose the priest is portrayed as a much more serious man to the job and dresses like a priest usually would when carrying out a church service, whereas in The Last Exorcism the priest has a lot more casual laidback look as portrayed through his undone shirt and not wearing his clerical collar. ‘The Last Exorcism’s’ other main character was called Reverend Cotton Marcus– Also a very traditional priest name which enables his character and resemblance to stand out.
Comparison… Short, mouse coloured hair Smart shirt Clerical collar
Costume… Due to the large differences between the two priests in these films, we thought it would be a good idea to have a mix between the two. This meant having our priest wearing the clerical collar – as it looked professional and instantly lets the audience know he is a priest without needing dialogue as it’s a typical priest symbolism, he will be dressed all in black and wearing a shirt and trousers rather than the robe – looks to formal and old fashioned whereas our supernatural horror is based in the present day, wear a cross necklace – a simple yet effective simple to show his connection with Jesus Christ. We didn’t need to buy any parts of this outfit as we already had all the different parts available for use when it came to filming. We wanted to get the outfit for the priest just right so our overall media piece would look professionally looked into and we had researched and planned the mise-en-scene point properly
Name inspiration… Anarchy – Meaning: ‘No ruler ship or enforced authority’ We thought that this would be a good name for the priest as its ironic that the meaning of it is what he is trying to enforce on the devil that’s inside Elizabeth
