CHAPTER

VITAL
FORCE
The Principles and Art of
Cure by Homoeopathy

ROBERTS, M.D.

Among physicians there is a
feeling that if we know the
Materia Medica that is all that is
required…
06-07-2024 Herbert A. Roberts 2
Requirements to be a
homoeopathic
practitioner
Not only materia medica but also,
1. its thorough comprehension and study
2. reasons underlying the administration of the
remedy
3. concept of philosophy (organon)
06-07-2024 Herbert A. Roberts 3
Why philosophy is of
utmost importance?
• The study of the materia medica by
Hahnemann caused no disturbance among the
medical men
• But when Hahnemann taught his fundamental
principles he attracted lot of antagonism
(enemies)
• IT WAS A NEW AND REVOLUTIONARY
DOCTRINE

Elements of Homoeopathy
every physician should be
familiar with
• different forms of energy – as it is the basis
of homoeopathic prescription
06-07-2024 Herbert A. Roberts 5
In §9 Hahnemann introduced
“LIFE” first time
“In the healthy condition of man the spirit like vital
force, the dynamis that animates the material body,
rules with unbounded sway and retains all the parts
the organism in admirable harmonious vital
as regards both sensations and functions, so that
indwelling, reason-gifted mind can freely employ
living, healthy instrument for the higher purposes
our existence.”

Trinity
MIND
SPIRIT
BODY
LIFE
• Interdependent to
each other
• present in all life
forms
06-07-2024 Herbert A. Roberts 7
• LIFE IS A TRINITY – united since
inception (birth)
• vital principle (spirit) already
present when two parent cells unite
(body + mind)
• ego of cell does not change
• the completed cell it has its own
power or energy for its development
• this energy flows continuously and
infinitely and dominates the whole
(organism)
06-07-2024 Herbert A. Roberts 8
Vital force (in disease)
• lack of harmony is seen through the outward
manifestations– symptoms
• we get sickness as a result
• this dis-harmony also seen- in proving of
remedies
06-07-2024 Herbert A. Roberts 9
Vital force (in
absence)
• the cell or body becomes inanimate and is
dead.
06-07-2024 Herbert A. Roberts 10
Vital force (in
presence)
• living organism
• capable of physical action and of the exercise
of mental powers and the ability to take hold on
the spiritual forces.
06-07-2024 Herbert A. Roberts 11
No two individuals are alike
• Each one possesses a special personality and
a special psycho-physical construction
determined by heredity
• the individual draws out
• physical energy - body
• dynamic energy – brain (mind)
• spiritual energy - spirit
• so this persona grows symmetrically (equally)
• symmetry becomes uneven in disturbance
the unity of
these 3
manifestions of
energy = united
personality
06-07-2024 Herbert A. Roberts 12
Factors that may disturb the vital
force?
1. prenatal influences, such as the effects of
sudden fright
2. indulgences on the part of either or both
parents at the time of conception
3. hereditary stigma of either one or both of the
parent cells, which may perhaps be due to
hereditary diseases or miasms.
• Like an indelible brand, the warping of this
dynamic energy is a stain that "will not
out."
06-07-2024 Herbert A. Roberts 13
So, what is a disease?
• the appearance of these disturbances reflects
the inward turmoil of the harmony between
mind, body, spirit
• it is not disturbance of an organ, tissue or even
mind but the disturbance of life or vital force
06-07-2024 Herbert A. Roberts 14
Treatment of
disturbed-dynamic-
vital force
• bring another storehouse of dynamic force,
which acts almost synchronously with the
disturbed vital force – homoeopathic remedy
• The pace is similar, the symptoms are similar
• there is cure
06-07-2024 Herbert A. Roberts 15
Why are homoeopathic
remedies potentized?
• potential form –
they reach the vital energy of the individual more
surely, promptly and directly
• toxic form –
owould destroy or subvert the vital energy without
showing the proper symptomatology
06-07-2024 Herbert A. Roberts 16
The best provings
• finer differentiations and most pronounced
reactions are seen from 30C and above
potencies
• in this potential form they more readily meet
the vital force
• In crude form they are not capable to produce
cure and are largely toxic.
06-07-2024 Herbert A. Roberts 17
Conclusion
• Vital force has a quality of giving unhampered
expression in the form of symptoms
• homoeopathic remedies do not disrupt this
expression
• methods like narcotics, tonic for vigour, injections
alter the expression and causes suppression
• As a result, the disease grows even more and
disturbs the more important deeper organs
