• CELLS HAVE DIFFERENT SHAPES AND FUNCTIONS WHICH CONFORM THE
TISSUES, ORGANS, SYSTEMS AND FINALLY THE WHOLE ORGANISM 
ORGANIZATION
EXAMPLES OF CELLS
SECTION 7.1 CELL DISCOVERY AND
THEORY
• The invention of the microscope led to the discovery of cells
• HISTORY OF THE CELL THEORY
• 1665, ROBERT HOOKE: Made a simple microscope and look at a
piece of cork. He observed small, box-shaped structures; he called
them cellulae  cell
The Cell Theory
• 1. All living organisms are composed of one or more
cells
• 2. Cells are the basic unit of structure and organization
of all living organisms
• 3. cells arise only from previously existing cells, with
cells passing copies of their genetic material on to their
daughter cells
MICROSCOPE TECHNOLOGY
• COMPOUND LIGHT MICROSCOPE
• ELECTRON MICROSCOPE (TEM)
