OVERVIEW
WHAT IS FORCE ?
Forces - Force is a push or pull upon an object
resulting from the object’s interaction with
another object.
Forces are VECTOR QUANTITY, describe using
magnitude (size) and direction
SI Unit – Newton (N) @ kgms-2

WEIGHT MASS
Definition: The force of gravity
on the object
Definition: The amount of
material in an object
SI unit: Newton (N) SI unit: kilogram (kg)
Weight depend on the size of
the object.
The bigger the object, the
greater the gravitational pull.
Mass does not change with a
body's position, movement or
alteration of its shape, unless
material is added or removed.

4. A box with a mass of 70 kg is placed on a horizontal
floor with a smooth surface. The velocity of the box
changes from stationary to 50 m/s in 10 seconds when it
is acted on by a force. Find the magnitude of the force.
5. What force will produce an acceleration of 7 m/s-2 in a
body of 10 kg?
6. Calculate the mass of a body when a force of 225 N
produces an acceleration of 2.5 m/s2.
7. What is the acceleration produced by a force of 10 N
acting on a body of mass 200g?

1. When all the forces that act upon an object are
balanced, then the object is said to be in a state
of equilibrium.
2. The forces are considered to be balanced if the
rightward forces are balanced by the leftward
forces and the upward forces are balanced by the
downward forces

Therefore, a stationary object will remain stationary
and a moving object will continue moving with the
same velocity in a straight line.

ON AN OBJECT
 When the forces acting on an object are not
balanced, there will be a net force acting on
it.
 The net force is known as RESULTANT
FORCE.

  • 8. WEIGHT MASS Definition: The force of gravity on the object Definition: The amount of material in an object SI unit: Newton (N) SI unit: kilogram (kg) Weight depend on the size of the object. The bigger the object, the greater the gravitational pull. Mass does not change with a body's position, movement or alteration of its shape, unless material is added or removed. WEIGHT & MASS
