Pressure Equalizing Tube
Abbreviation: PE Tube
A PE tube is a small tube that is surgically
placed in a child’s ear to assist in
drainage of fluid.
It is used for children with recurrent ear
infections.
Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat
 Abbreviation: EENT
 The study of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat.

 This branch of medicine is called otolaryngology.
Bone
Conduction
Abbreviation: BC
The conduction of sounds to
the inner ear through the bones
of the skull.
Hearing aids, and assisted
listening devices are bone
conduction products.
Both Ears
Abbreviation: AU (Auris Utraque)
Auris is the Latin word for “Ear” and Utraque is
the Latin word for “both, each, or together”
Otitis Media
Abbreviation: OM
Otitis Media is the
inflammation of the middle
(media) ear which occurs
between the tympanic
membrane and the inner ear.
Common in children.
It heals quickly.
Emmetropia
Abbreviation: EM
Emmetropia is the state of
normal vision.
Exotropia
Abbreviation: XT
Muscle weakness in the eye
relating to strabismus.
Often referred to as cocked
eyes, or lazy eye.
Can be corrected with
glasses, eye exercise, or
surgery.
Left Eye
Abbreviation: OS (Ocular Sinister)
Extraocular
Movement
Abbreviation: EOM
Voluntary conjugate movement of the
eyes.
Visual Acuity
Abbreviation: VA
Acuteness or clearness of
vision.
