International trade expanded greatly in the 17th-18th centuries and continued growing in the post-World War 2 era, reaching over $100 billion by 1957. This growth was driven by increased industrial production and rising prices of goods in the major trading nations. While India once had a larger share of world trade, its percentage declined from 2% to 0.4% between 1950-1980 before recovering to around 0.8% by 1997. India's rankings in global competitiveness indices also remain relatively low compared to developed and other major developing countries.
Reflections on a Jr. High Wiki Project

- Aid and Development can get bogged down in words and jargon. One key to simplicity is to be more visual in our approaches. The Wordle on the left is a summary from ten interviews for the KISS my Aid paper. The elephant on the right is inspired by the folk tale of the Blind men and the Elephant – six blind men all felt and described different parts of the animal. This visual of the Aid and Development beast can be interpreted in many ways. Some suggestions from my paper: Legs = organisational pillars of aid & development: Government, NGOs, Multilaterals, Managing Contractors Sides = developing v developed countries Tusks = political economy , power and money Ears = for listening powerfully and well Trunk = for flexible tools and flexible ways of working Tail - covering the rear end and swatting away the persistent critics of aid A final caution: Don’t stand too close to the rear end of an elephant!
