The document discusses the design and purpose of screens in mosques. Traditionally, screens were made of wood and ranged from 1.5 meters high. Their main purpose was to prevent visual interaction between men and women during prayers while still allowing light. The proposed screen design combines traditional mashrabiya woodwork with a more open, minimally decorated contemporary style. It is made of woven teak wood panels and vertical and horizontal wood elements to allow light but not full visibility. The central part is elevated to represent the axis extending to Mecca. Light is an important symbol and plays a role in revealing architectural elements like brick patterns.

The key elements of a mosque include the minaret, prayer hall, mihrab, and minbar. The minaret is a tall tower usually found at a mosque's corner which serves as a visual focal point and is used to call people to prayer. The large central prayer hall contains no furniture as worshippers pray directly on the floor. It also houses copies of the Quran along the walls. The mihrab is an ornamented niche on the wall that indicates the direction of Mecca. The minbar is a raised pulpit located beside the mihrab where the imam may deliver sermons. An ablution place allows worshippers to wash parts of their body before prayer.

Vernacular architecture of Tigray and Dorze Houses Yohannes Goytom
The Dorze people of Ethiopia are known for their beehive-shaped huts built from vertical wood poles and woven bamboo. Reaching heights of 12 meters, the huts are subdivided into sections for cooking, livestock, bedrooms, and brewing and can last 60-80 years. When foundations deteriorate, the entire structure is carefully lifted and relocated. The Tigray people of northern Ethiopia construct rectangular or rounded stone houses with flat, wood-covered roofs and beautifully carved exterior stone steps. Interior walls are painted white using crushed limestone, while ceilings feature curved wood in geometric patterns. Wealthier homes include three free-standing buildings within stone fences.
The document discusses the preservation of cultural heritage and provides examples from Germany of integrated conservation approaches. It describes how the 1975 European Year of Preservation of Monuments marked a shift towards involving local communities in decisions and renewing historic areas in a way that maintains social diversity. The IBA in Berlin in the 1980s pioneered "careful urban renewal" through community participation and gradual improvements. Leipzig's "Guardian Buildings" program addresses vacant historic structures by having tenants take responsibility for upkeep in exchange for low rents.

Conservation of the Urban Heritage to Conserve the Sense of Place, a Case Stu...drboon
The sense of place can only be achieved if the urban heritage is still intact and preserved whilst accommodating for new development. In the past Misurata city center where the traditional areas and historical significance are located did not have any positive consideration and appreciation from government which, were destroyed to build a new commercial buildings within business district area of city center. This paper intends to highlight on urban heritage "historical significance & activity pattern" that still survive in the city center of Misurata and reflects the sense of place. The study adapted the visual survey field method for data collection and this approach adopted techniques namely photograph and diagrams or maps. The results of the study indicate that there are some urban areas and buildings with historical or traditional significance and conducive sense of belonging and identity that must be renewed, restored, reused and conserved; for instance the marketplace, Allfah Square and the old city center.
Conservation and revitalization of historic buildingsALI HYDER GADHI
The document discusses conservation and revitalization of architecture. It defines conservation as processes to retain a place's cultural significance, including preservation, maintenance, restoration, reconstruction and adaptation. Revitalization is defined as conserving historic buildings and putting them to good use. Five common methods of building conservation are outlined - preservation, maintenance, restoration, reconstruction and adaptation - with examples provided. The class activity involves students role playing as stakeholders to discuss conserving an old, threatened building in their local area.
The Kingdom of Aksum existed from 400 BCE to the 10th century AD in the Horn of Africa region. It was located in modern-day Eritrea and Ethiopia and centered its economy around trade due to its central location along major sea routes. Aksumites originally believed in one god and spirits but later converted to Christianity under King Ezana in the 4th century AD. The kingdom constructed monumental pillars and was the first south of the Sahara to produce coins.
The document discusses four case studies on the adaptive reuse of historic buildings and structures based on different schools of thought. It focuses on the restoration of the Bhaudaji Lad Museum in Mumbai and the adaptive reuse of traditional pol houses in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The pol houses showcase the rich culture and traditions of the past but now face issues due to modernization. The case study proposes sensitively adapting the structures for new uses while preserving original fabric to promote heritage conservation and generate funds for maintenance. This allows the buildings to be sustainably reused in a way that benefits both inhabitants and preservation of cultural heritage.
This document provides an overview of a lecture on architectural conservation. It defines architectural conservation as protecting the material, historical, and design integrity of built heritage through planned interventions. It discusses the different approaches of preservation, conservation, restoration, rehabilitation, and reconstruction. Techniques for conserving ancient stone structures like cleaning, consolidating, and protecting with water repellents are outlined. The criteria for selecting sites for the UNESCO World Heritage List are presented, including representing cultural or natural significance or outstanding universal value. Students are assigned to document a visited site and submit a report on a selected Indian monument on the World Heritage List.

Sudan is located in Northeast Africa and has a population of over 30 million people. It gained independence from British and Egyptian rule in 1956. Sudan has experienced two civil wars since 1955 that have greatly impacted the country.
This document is a table of contents for a work about architecture in Sudan. It lists sections on Khartoum, Sudan, and Tuti Island, including introductions to the cities, construction materials, sites, walls, passages, docks, courtyards, mosques, markets, libraries, plazas, villages, and bibliographies. Key sections examine the use of brick and concrete in Sudan, the ferry dock in Khartoum, the mosque design, the marketplace, and the village core on Tuti Island.
This document contains a bibliography section divided into books and articles.
The books section lists 7 references for published books on topics related to architecture, mosques, engineering, world architecture, vernacular architecture, and the architecture of the Islamic world.
The articles section lists 8 references for published articles on topics like architecture in Sudan, environmental monitoring around Tuti Island, urbanization in Sudan, thermal performance of earth dwellings, and the future of Sudan's capital region.
This document summarizes a thesis project that aimed to design a bridge linking the contemporary city of Khartoum to the rural Tuti Island in Sudan. The bridge would merge the fast-paced life of the city with the quiet life on the island. In addition, landmarks would be created on the island to serve as points of reference and incorporate elements of traditional Islamic architecture like courtyards. These landmarks included an edge site with a threshold and wall/courtyard, a market, mosque, library, and central plaza renovating historical buildings. The goal was to connect Khartoum city to the center of Tuti Island, blending the modern and vernacular worlds.
This thesis examines bridging contemporary architecture with vernacular architecture traditions. It is submitted by Omeima Khidir to Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University's faculty in partial fulfillment of a Master of Architecture degree, with Susan Piedmont-Palladino as committee chair. The introduction cites a James Steele quote that architecture reflects the socio-economic, cultural, and technological realities of a society, and includes a prayer from the Quran asking God to show the straight path and bless those who have received grace and do not go astray.
This document is a resume for Omeima KHidir seeking a position as an architect. It summarizes their experience over 20 years working on architectural projects in both the US and Sudan, including residential, commercial, and urban planning projects. Their expertise includes architectural design, project management, construction documentation, and technical skills. They have a Master's degree in Architecture from Virginia Tech and Bachelor's degree from University of Khartoum.

shade which will emphasize the align-
ment of the brick that relate to the
alignment required in prayers. See
model photo (p.55).
The separation between the qibla wall
and the other walls support the concept
of the mosque being a wall that is right
angled to the qibla axis.

and the mihrab and minbar relationship and
the worshippers praying rows.
2- The drainage system of the roof, where

the cutter is built in the dome ring beam, that
emphasizes the importance of the running
water from the roof onto the wall to a
concrete channel in the ground level,
reflects the concept of purity in Islam. This
specific area is built in glazed brick that will
keep it shiny and durable.

3. These figures (a), (b), shows an analysis THE SCREEN
of light falling on a mashrabiya where (a) is (4.3 inches)
an example of lattice arrangement; and (b) 11.0 cm
Public and private life are strictly
the effect of light falling on a cylinder, which 3.5 cm (1.4 inches)
just to give an example of how the light and demarcated in Islamic society, and even
shade of the cylinder subdue the dazzling within the house, the degree of privacy
effect of dark-light contrast, which normally is expressed architecturally, the most
occurs when looking from the inside fundamental division being between
towards the light outside. Sahrigi grill
male and female. The screen is the
basic form for the mashrabiya, which is
an enclosed window made of wood
elaborately decorated, its main function
is to allow light but not vision. Seeking
privacy either in the house by having
high, with no opening walls, or using
(a) Mashrabiya of turned wood wood partitions, where the aim is to
separate between the sexes.
This is carried out in the mosque as well,
by having the females on the second
level (mezzanine) or using partitions if
they are in the same floor. Being in the
second level the barrier is usually used,
Spreading effect of it could be in any shape and height, it
balustre shapes
could be in wood or glass or both. The
screen (the barrier) could allow vision
fully or partially fig (1),(2),(3).
Trying to combine both concepts of full
or partial visibility. The screen is made
of two parts. The first part is weaved
teak wood of 1.20 m high panels, the
second part is a combination of vertical
highlight darkest shade
and horizontal elements, each at 20 cm
apart with 20 cm high, holding a 5 x 10
cm horizontal wood elements.
Carrying out the axis concept, that
extends from the entrance to the mihrab
and ends in Mecca, the part of the
(b) Elevation
reflecting light screen that falls in that axis is elevated
up to 1.80 m high. The intention is to
represent it as a gate to Mecca. That
part is placed between the two cylindri-
cal columns, and it is treated differently

4. Light is a symbol of the divine and
unity. For Muslims, artists and archi-
tects, they transform things fashioned
by the light into vibration of light. Light
has a religious dimension, and in
Islamic architecture, it modifies other
elements of decoration and it origi-
nates patterns.
Materials and architectural elements
in Islamic buildings are chosen to
reflect and refract and to be trans-
formed by light and shade. For in-
stance, using glossy floors, walls and
ceiling to reflect light over the elements
that can reflect it back, and so as to
illuminate the space.
In this sense, light contributes in a
dynamic quality in Islamic decoration,
it extends the matter of form, pattern
and design, into the dimension of time.
As the day progresses, the forms
change according to the angles of light
and shade, they create a strong
contrast of planes and reveals the
texture of materials, which is the aim
here, as for the qibla brick wall. The
light and shade will explicitly reveals the
brick texture and the pattern of the
brick courses that will reflect the
consecutive rows of worshippers,
which is essential in Islam.
The Prophet used to say when he was heading to the mosque:
“O Allah, make light in my heart, and light in my vision, and light in my hearing, and light on my right, and light in my nerves, and light in my
flesh, and light in my blood, and light in my hair, and light in my skin.”
Recorded from Ibn ‘Abbas by AL-Bukhari and Muslim.
