Overview of Medical Terms Ichthyosis Onycholysis Rhytidectomy Sebaceous Cyst
Ichthyosis Ichthyosis – Scale like skin disorder Ichthy/o  – Greek for fish.  Osis  – referring to a disorder or abnormal condition The term refers to a skin disorder that involves dry, thickened, scaly or flaky skin. In many types of ichthyosis the skin is cracked, which is said to resemble the scales on a fish. Hereditary ichthyosis vulgaris (meaning usual or common) is fairly common. As many as 1 in 250 children may have hereditary ichthyosis vulgaris. Acquired ichthyosis vulgaris is rare and is found almost exclusively in adults. Hereditary ichthyosis vulgaris tends to improve after puberty, while acquired ichthyosis vulgaris requires treatment of the medical condition before it will improve. Onycholysis Onycholysis – Breaking down of the nail Onych/o  – Latin for nail or claw Lysis  – Greek for breaking down, destruction or loosening It is a nail disorder characterized by a spontaneous separation of the nail plate starting at the distal free margin and progressing proximally.  The nails are usually smooth, firm, and without inflammatory reaction.  Contact irritants, trauma, and moisture are the most common causes of onycholysis. Rhytidectomy Rhytidectomy –Surgical removal of wrinkles Rhytid/o  – Meaning wrinkle  Ectomy  – Greek for cutting out or removing It is a type of cosmetic surgery usually involving the removal of excess facial skin, with or without the tightening of underlying tissues, and the re-draping of the skin on a patient. Sebaceous Cyst Sebaceous Cyst – Oil filled sac Seb/o  – Pertaining to oil or fat Aceous  – Meaning coming from or made of Cyst  – An enclosing or sac  It is a blocked gland or duct containing fatty secretion of a sebaceous gland.
