Editor's Notes

  • #3 Intro: Imagine you’re at the Carlson Business and Career fair, and you get an interview form a compnay,Sitting in the interview, they look straight at you and asay: “Name a time when you had to convince someone to do something they did not want to do?”“Name a time you failed at something.”“What is your biggest failure, and what did you learn.”These aren’t questions trying to figure out how terrible you are, they are questions related directly to real world business situations. You need to know how to handle failure, work in teams, and really persevere and learn and grow. And the Carlson Globlal Case Competition will help you do just that, and give you good answers to any interview question you will ever have.
  • #4 Overview:The case competition team is composed of two teams of 4 people, each having one alternate. One team goes to Vancouver, one team goes to Singapore. The teams do switch up sometimes, ensuring everyone competes, even alternates. The competitions range from 24 hous to multiple days straight.
  • #5 For the uninitiated a case competition involves multiple colleges sending teams to one competition. Then every team is given a business case with details surrounding a business and a business initiative or problem. Then, the teams are given a finite amount of time to develop a technically oriented solution to the business problems, and must present it usually in a 20 minute presentation with 10 minutes Q&A.The problem can be anything from a new knowledge management system, to online social media analytics, to developing a new agile methodology for internal programs. They can be anything and everything. Some cases don’t even ask an explicit question.
  • #6 Why?Interview and Resume fodder: looks great, always can answer questions, learn how real businesses approach problems.Free travel: you can go to awesome places for free and meet some amazing people.Applied learning: when in class, you will constantly think: “I can use this for the case competition” It makes learning fun again.Presentation SkillsCredit!FUN: It’s just a ridiculous amount of fun.
  • #7 Travel: One team goes to Singapore for a week, another to Vancouver for a week, and ther are also local competitions we will go to at St. Paul and the hometown competition, CoMIS.{Relate about your experience here.}
  • #8 Who should apply? Only 4.0 students? Only seniors? Only native english speakers? NOOOOOOOOO.Move to next slide for who should apply.
  • #9 Self-explanatory.
  • #11 How to apply:Run through applications, deadline, minimum requirements.Selection Saturday: When all applications are reviewed we will select the top applicants for a 24 hour competition for selection. After everyone presents their solution, we will choose the teams based off of the presentations and applications.Preparation: Go to case compt 101!!!!!! Seriously!!! Room number will be available on clubmis.Materials in MIS lab: old cases, some readings, other information that will be helpful.Any questions? Email Corrie Fiedler.
