CELEBRITIES AND
PRO-ATHLETES
WHO HAVE SEEN AN
ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON
Orthopedic injuries and problems are common, and you can find a
history of injury, surgery and recovery among famous actors,
musicians, and professional athletes. For some, the surgery is routine,
such as replacing an aging hip. While others face complex, high-risk
surgeries to repair the damage caused by their occupations.
The world of orthopedic surgery is liberally sprinkled with well-known
names, including these real-life celebrities who have suffered injuries
or conditions worthy of an orthopedic surgeon's attention.
percent
30percent
83
A staggering 83 percent of
NFL retirees have had
orthopedic surgery...
and 30 percent of these
former players have had five
or more surgeries.
Tony Romo
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo suffered from a herniated disc that was originally
thought to be a hamstring injury. Rather, the lumbar spinal disc compressed nerves
associated with this area of the body, causing leg pain. In December 2013, he had a
microdiscectomy to correct the problem. During this procedure, all or part of the
herniated disc was removed to treat the pressure on the nerve root.
Ahmad Bradshaw
Indianapolis Colts running back Ahmad Bradshaw suffered from a bulging disc in his
neck. A surgical procedure to remove the disc and fuse the vertebrae together relieved the
pain and allowed him to return to football.
FOOTBALL PLAYERS
11
Arian Foster
Much like Romo, Houston Texans running back Arian Foster suffered
from hamstring pain as a result of herniated disc. He had a lumbar
microdiscectomy to relieve the nerve pressure and pain in November
2013.
Jermichael Finley
A collision on the field caused severe spinal cord compression for
Green Bay Packers tight end Jermichael Finley in 2013. He was
temporarily paralyzed and underwent an anterior cervical fusion of the
C-3 and C-4 vertebrae to relieve pressure on the spinal cord.
Devonte Holloman
Former Dallas Cowboys linebacker Devonte Holloman has not
undergone spinal surgery, but he could benefit from a spinal fusion
surgery. A bruised spinal cord and spinal contusion caused
serious injuries that effectively ended his career as a football
player. Doctors judged the risk of paralysis too great and
recommended that he retire.
2
DavidWilson
New York Giants running back David Wilson had
a spinal fusion to correct spinal stenosis. A
narrowing of the spinal canal characterizes this
condition which, for Wilson, was caused by a neck
injury on the field. Although he returned to training
camp after the surgery, he suffered a neck burner
shortly after, which led to his early retirement from
football.
Peyton Manning
Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning is no stranger to
pain. He's undergone multiple neck surgeries over the years for
a herniated disc and fusions.
3
OTHER ATHLETES
Dwight Howard
Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic underwent spine surgery to correct a herniated
disc. A herniated disc occurs when the nucleus of the disc ruptures through the
outer layer and into the space where the nerve roots reside.
For Howard, the herniated disc caused radiculopathy, where compression of the nerve
root causes pain and a loss of sensation in the associated area. Howard suffered
severe weakness in his left leg before he had the surgery.
Alex Rodriguez
Yankees ballplayer Alex Rodriguez suffered from a torn labrum and bone impingement
in his left hip. A hip arthroscopy was performed to correct this common sports injury.
4
Dara Torres
Olympic swimmer Dara Torres had surgery to
remove painful bone spurs and repair a partially-
torn rotator cuff. The pain was so severe before
the surgery that she was concerned she may not
be able to compete in the Beijing Olympics.
Post-surgery, the relief was immediate.
Maria Sharapova
Tennis star Maria Sharapova suffered from an injured rotator
cuff. She underwent surgery but had to withdraw from the
2009 U.S. Open to recover.
5
ACTORS &
ACTRESSES
George Clooney
An intense action scene in the 2005 film "Syriana" caused a back injury so severe that actor
George Clooney said at times he considered "ending it all." During filming, the actor hit his
head on a floor and tore the dura, a delicate wrap holding spinal fluid in the spine. He has
undergone several corrective surgeries and his spine is now reinforced with rods
and screws. However, Clooney maintains that the injury has not completely healed.
Jennifer Grey
Actress Jennifer Grey of "Dirty Dancing" fame suffered severe neck pain following a car
accident in 1987. She ignored the pain for decades, but during a routine physical before
she participated in the 11th season of "Dancing with the Stars," a doctor discovered severe
slippage of the vertebrae. Jennifer underwent two spine surgeries before the show
and had another surgery to repair a ruptured disc in her back after the season
ended.
6
Melanie Griffith
Actress Melanie Griffith hasn't had spine surgery, but she may have been
well-served by such treatment for her neck pain. Griffith had suffered from
chronic neck pain following a car accident in 1980. The injury led to a
painkiller addiction that persisted for several years. Her addiction
worsened years later after enduring a ski accident and knee surgeries.
However, after several stints in rehab, the actress now maintains that she is
clean.
Steve Carell
Actor Steve Carell suffered from an ice hockey
injury that ultimately led to his right hip
replacement. He suffered from hip pain for 12
years with twice-yearly shots as treatment. At age
51, when he found he could only walk with a
severe limp, he finally opted for a ceramic hip
replacement. Post-surgery, the actor said he felt
wonderful and even suggested that a return to
hockey may be in his future.

MUSICIANS
Paula Abdul
Recording artist Paula Abdul suffers from reflex sympathetic
dystrophy syndrome (RSDS) that is often associated with injury or
trauma. Her experience with injury began at age 17 when she
suffered a cheerleading injury. She declined surgery and struggled
to simply live with the pain. She was involved in a car accident in
1987 and a plane crash in 1993. Following the plane crash, she
had 15 spinal surgeries. However, her pain persisted and she has
struggled with an addiction to painkillers as a result.
Billy Joel
Musician Billy Joel underwent hip replacement surgery as a result of a congenital condition,
a problem present at birth. In 2010, he had both hips replaced.
8
Ray Charles
In 2003, Ray Charles had to cancel shows due to severe
hip pain. This stunning revelation was particularly newsworthy
for Charles, who hadn't cancelled a tour in 53 years of
performing. At age 73, he had his left hip replaced. After the
surgery, he said that he felt terrific and was ready to start
touring on the road again.
EddieVan Halen
Rock artist Eddie Van Halen suffered from avascular necrosis of the hip, a
condition that deprives the femoral ball of blood, causing bone tissue to
die. The condition could be the result of alcohol abuse, which Van Halen
has acknowledged. At the relatively young age of 44, he had hip
replacement surgery from the same orthopedic surgeon who performed
similar operations on Liza Minnelli and Elizabeth Taylor.
9
PERSONALITIES
Jane Fonda
In 2005, at age 67, fitness guru Jane Fonda had her hip replaced. Before that year,
she had knee replacement surgery. Today, she's in great shape and looks as fit as ever.
Regis Philbin
In 2009, Regis Philbin had a routine hip replacement at age 78. After about four
weeks in recovery, he resumed his spot on the former "Regis and Kelly" talk show.
Evil Knievel
Stuntman Evil Knievel suffered 433 broken bones during his
career and underwent 14 major operations. He had several
metal pins and steel plates set in his body as a result of these
injuries. His surgeries continued into his retirement and include
a hip replacement and spinal fusion surgery which attached
three steel plates in his back with six screws.
10
George H.W. Bush
Former President George H. W. Bush
has had two routine hip replacements.
His left hip was replaced in 2000. At
age 82, Bush had his right hip
replaced in 2007.

BALLET
DANCERS
Michael Nunn
Michael Nunn of the Ballet Boyz danced on a torn
Achilles tendon for 18 months before seeking surgical
treatment. He also had surgery for a broken toe that
revealed bone fragments which had also caused pain for
more than a year.
Dancing on injuries is not uncommon in ballet, where
professionals dread losing a coveted company spot.
As a result, many dancers don't get the surgeries they
perhaps should.
12
Alina Cojocaru
Alina Cojocaru, principal ballerina with the Royal
Ballet, provides another example of dancers'
dedication. While rehearsing "La Fin du Jour,"
something went wrong with a lift and Cojocaru
suffered from a collapsed disc in her spine. She
danced with the injury many times but was eventually
unable to turn her head or lift a can of soda. Five
months after spine surgery, she was able to return to
dance, fully recovered.
13
As these many cases show, having a surgical procedure to relieve the pain of an injury or
other ailment can relieve the issue almost entirely and lead to a long and successful career in
many industries.
If you're suffering from ongoing pain, follow the examples set by many of these stars and get the
treatment you need to return to a full and pain-free life.
