Web Hosting
Buying or renting storage space to
store website in a web server and
provide service ( made available 24x7 )
internet to all the computer connected
to the internet.
Types of web hosting
• Shared hosting
• Dedicated hosting
• Virtual private server ( VPS )
Shared hosting
• Sharing resources like memory , disk space
and CPU hence the name shared .
• Several websites share the same server.
• This is suitable for small websites that have
less traffic .
• Not suitable for large websites that have large
bandwidth, large storage space and have large
volume traffic.
Dedicated hosting
• A web server and its resources are exclusively
for one website that have large volume of
requests by the visitors.
• Some govt. departments or organizations
require uninterrupted service for that round
the clock power supply is needed.
• Expensive and reliable.
• Provide good service to the public.
Virtual private server
• Virtual Private server is a physical server that
is virtually partitioned in to several servers .
• VPS hosting provides dedicated bandwidth to
each website on the server.
• This is suitable for websites that require more
features than shared hosting
• Less features than dedicated hosting.
• Vmware , User Mode Linux…. are examples.
Buying hosting space
• Buying sufficient amount of memory space for
storing our website files.
• If the webpage contains programming
contents supporting technology must be
consider.
• Based up on the programs select windows
hosting or Linux hosting.
DNS Registration
• Millions of websites are available over internet
so that our website must be registered with a
suitable name.
• It is used to identify website over internet.
• It must be unique.
• Want to check the availability of domain name
before registration.
FTP client software
• FTP is used to transfer files from one
computer to another on the internet.
• So to transfer files we need a FTP client s/w
with which we can connect our system with a
server computer which is using a FTP server
s/w and is placed somewhere else.
• Requires a username, password and domain
name to connect.
FTP client software
• SSH FTP ( Secure Shell FTP ) is used which encrypts
and sends usernames, passwords and data to the
web server
• SSH protocol also provides secure file transfer.
• In the FTP IDE, files that are to be uploaded to the
web server can be moved using ‘drag and drop’
method.
• Popular FTP client s/ws are CuteFTP, SmartFTP,
FileZilla etc.
Free hosting
• Provides web hosting free of charge
• Service provider displays advertisements in the
websites hosted.
• They may place some restrictions.
• Size of the files that can be uploaded will be
limited ( maybe upto 5 MB)
• Useful for sharing content on the web among
groups having similar interests.
• Our site will be having the domain name in the
following format;
• Oursite.example.com or
www.example.com/oursite
• Sites.google.com, yola.com etc provides free
web hosting.
Content Management System(CMS)
• Web based software system capable of
creating, administering and publishing
websites.
• Provides an easy way to design and manage
websites.
• Sample templates(models) will be available.
• Users can select desired template, upload the
datas, images and other descriptions for the
chosen design.
Content Management System(CMS)
• Help people with less technical knowledge to
design and develop websites.
• Third party vendors are there who can
customise the CMS for users.
• Eg s/w for CMS is Joomla, WordPress, Drupal
etc.
Responsive Web Design
The type of web designing in which the screen size
of the device we are using for web browsing adjust
itself for our use is called responsive web
designing.
The device may be desktop, laptop, tablet, mobile
phone etc.
Responsive web designing was coined by ETHAN
MARCOTTE.
• Responsive web designing is implemented
using 3 items;
1.Flexible grid layout : it sets the size of the
entire web page to fit the display size of the
device.
2.Flexible image/video: it sets the image/video
dimensions to the percentage of display size of
the device.
3.Media query: provides the ability to specify
different styles for individual devices.
And That Is The End Of The
Chapter …
