This document discusses factors that influence Mexican male students dropping out of high school. It profiles two Mexican male students who immigrated to the US at ages 14-15, were undocumented with no English skills, and from low socioeconomic backgrounds. One student dropped out after 4 months while the other graduated. Commonalities that pushed students to drop out included low grades, need to work, and lack of social support networks. Cultural differences between American schools and Latino students also contributed, such as inability to acculturate and lack of bilingual staff. The document recommends increasing teacher cultural awareness, hiring more Spanish-speaking staff, engaging families, and reforming curriculum and tests to be more inclusive of non-native students.
