Start By:
a. Remove the torque converter.
NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool
Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on
Cat®
products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the disassembly procedure, ensure that the
exterior of the component is clean to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism. Dirt and
contaminants can damage the precision components.

1. Place the torque converter assembly on suitable cribbing. Remove bolts (1).
2. Install Tooling (A). Tighten Tooling (A) to separate housing assembly (2) and impeller
assembly (3).

3. Remove spline plate (4) and reaction plate (4A).
Note: Note the orientation of the discs.
4. Remove piston (5), separator plate (6A), and friction disc (6).

5. Remove spline plate (7) and converter turbine (8) as a unit.
6. Remove bearing (9). Remove bolts (10). Remove spline plate (7) from converter turbine (8).

7. Remove bearing (11) and stator (12).
8. Remove retaining ring (13A) and thrust washer (14A).

9. Remove retaining ring (13) and thrust washer (14).
10. Remove inner race (15), rollers (16), springs (17), and cam (15A).

11. Remove bearing (18). Remove bolts (19) and impeller (20).
12. Remove retaining ring (21) from shaft assembly (22).

13. Use a suitable press to remove shaft assembly (22) from carrier assembly (23).
14. Remove seals (24) from shaft assembly (22).
15. Use Tooling (B) and a suitable press to remove bearing (25) (not shown) from carrier
assembly (23).

16. Remove lip seal (26), retaining ring (27), and shaft assembly (28) from stator assembly (29).
17. Use Tooling (C) and a suitable press to remove bearing (30) from shaft assembly (28).

1. Use a suitable press to install bearing (30) onto shaft assembly (28).

2. Apply Tooling (D) to the bore and install lip seal (26) into stator assembly (29) within ±
0.63 mm (0.025 inch) of the surface. Install shaft assembly (28) into stator assembly (29).
Install retaining ring (27).
3. Use Tooling (B) and a suitable press to install bearing (25) into carrier assembly (23).

4. Install seals (24) into shaft assembly (22).
5. Use a suitable press to install shaft assembly (22) into carrier assembly (23).
6. Install retaining ring (21) onto shaft (22).

7. Use Tooling (E) and a suitable press to install stator assembly (29) and carrier assembly
(23) onto shaft assembly (28).

8. Install impeller (20) and bolts (19). Install bearing (18).
9. Install retaining ring (13A) and thrust washer (14A) in stator (12).

10. Raise the temperature of stator (12) to 135° C (275° F).
11. Lower the temperature of cam (15A) to −40° C (−40° F). Install cam (15A) into stator (12)
with impeller side marking up as shown in illustration 11.
12. Install inner race (15).
13. Install rollers (16) and springs (17).
Note: Install springs (17) in larger side of the cam pocket with maximum number of loops
towards outside as shown in Illustration 12.
14. Install thrust washer (14) and retaining ring (13).

15. Install stator (12) and bearing (11).
16. Install spline plate (7) and bolts (10) onto converter turbine (8). Install bearing (9).

17. Install converter turbine (8) and spline plate (7) as a unit into the housing assembly.
18. Install reaction plate (4A) and spline plate (4).
19. Install friction disc (6) and separator plate (6A).
20. Install piston (5) into housing assembly (2).

21. Install housing assembly (2) onto impeller assembly (3). Install bolts (1). Tighten bolts (1)
to a torque of 60 ± 7 N·m (44 ± 5 lb ft).
End By:
a. Install the torque converter.

Transmission and Bevel Gears - Separate and Connect

Start By:
a. Remove the transmission and bevel gears.
1. Position transmission and bevel gears (1) on Tooling (A).

2. Disconnect harness assemblies (2). Remove bolt (3).
3. Install Tooling (B) and a suitable lifting device to transmission and bevel gears (1).
4. Remove bolts (4)

5. Remove bevel and transfer gears (5). The weight of bevel and transfer gears (5) is
approximately 249 kg (550 lb).
Connection Procedure
1. Install bevel gears (5) and transmission in the reverse order of removal.

a. Separate the transmission and bevel gears. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly,
"Transmission and Bevel Gears - Separate".

1. Mount bevel and transfer gears (1) onto Tooling (A).
2. Remove bracket assemblies (2).

3. Remove O-ring seals (4).
4. If necessary, remove pins (3).
5. Disconnect harness assemblies (7), sensors (5), and bracket (6).

6. Remove bolts (8). Use two bolts (8) in order to remove cage (9).
7. Remove shims (10).
8. Remove O-ring seal (12), seal (11), bearing (14), and bearing cup (13) from cage (9).

9. Remove bolts (15), cover (16), and shims (17).
10. Remove bolts (18). Use two bolts (18) in order to remove cover (19). Tighten bolts (18)
evenly and remove cover (19).

11. If necessary, remove dowels (20) and bearing cup (21) from cover (19).
Note: Gears (22) and (23) must be removed from the case assembly at the same time.
12. Remove gear (22) and gear (23) from the case assembly.

Note: Bearing cones (24) must be destroyed in order to remove the cones from the gear.
13. Remove bearing cones (24) from gear (22).
14. Remove bolt (25) and retainer (26) from gear (23).

15. Use Tooling (B) and a suitable press in order to remove bearing cone (27) from gear (28).
16. Use a suitable press in order to remove bearing cone (29) from gear (28) and from gear (23).

17. Remove bearing cups (30) from case (31).
18. Bend the tab on lock ring (33) away from nut (32).

Note: Use a new lock ring (33) during assembly.
19. Use Tooling (C) in order to remove nut (32).
20. Remove washer (34) and bearing cone (34A).
21. Attach a suitable lifting device to shaft assembly (35). The weight of shaft assembly (35) is
approximately 39 kg (86 lb).
22. Remove shaft assembly (35).
23. Remove bolts (36) and gear (37).
