Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before assembly, all parts should be thoroughly cleaned
in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry parts.
Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause later trouble. Inspect all parts. If any parts are
worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.

1. Use Tooling (E) to install seal (19) in the spindle. Install the seal with the lip upward, as
shown.
2. If bearing cone (21) was removed, raise the temperature of the bearing cone to a maximum
temperature of 120°C (248°F), and install the bearing cone on the spindle.
3. Use Tooling (F) to install Duo-Cone seal (20) on the hub.
4. If bearing cups (18) were removed from the hub, lower the temperature of the bearing cups.
Install bearing cups (18) in the hub.
5. Use Tooling (F) to install Duo-Cone seal (17) in the hub.

6. Attach a suitable lifting device and Tooling (G) to hub (15) . The weight of the hub is
approximately 159 kg (350 lb). Lower hub (15) in position on spindle (16) .
7. Raise the temperature of bearing cone (14) to a maximum temperature of 120°C (248°F).
Install bearing cone (14) on the spindle.

Note: If Tooling (H) is not available or does not fit the spindle, skip to Step 10. Use hub
(12) to press bearing cone (14) into position. Press hub (12) until the surface of hub (12) is
even with the surface on the spindle.
8. While bearing cone (14) is still hot, place Tooling (H) in position. Install retainer (10) and
bolts (9) . Tighten bolts (9) to a torque of 135 N·m ± 15 N·m (100 lb ft ± 11 lb ft).
9. After bearing cone (14) has cooled, remove the retainer and Tooling (H) .
10. Put hub (12) in position in gear (11) . Install ring (13) .
11. Attach a suitable lifting device to hub (12) . Put hub (12) and gear (11) in position on the
spindle as an assembly. The weight of the gear and the hub is approximately 34 kg (75 lb).

12. Install retainer (10) and bolts (9) . Tighten bolts (9) to a torque of 135 N·m ± 15 N·m (100
lb ft ± 11 lb ft).
13. Use a feeler gauge to verify that there is metal to metal contact between retainer (10) and the
spindle.

14. If bearing cups (6) were removed from gear (7) , lower the temperature of bearing cups (6) .
Install bearing cups (6) in gear (7) .
15. Put bearing cones (8) and (5) in position in gear (7) .
16. Put the bearing cones and gear (7) in position in carrier (1) . Lower the temperature of shaft
(4) . Use a suitable press to install shaft (4) in carrier (1) . Install shaft (4) until the end of
shaft (4) is even with the outside surface of carrier (1) .
17. Install retainers (3) and bolts (2) . There must be a metal to metal contact between retainers
(3) and the shafts.
18. Attach a suitable lifting device and Tooling (A) to carrier (1) . The weight of the carrier is
approximately 98 kg (215 lb). Put carrier (1) in position in hub (15) . Install bolts (22) .
End By: Install the final drives. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive - Install".

1. Put O-ring (8) in position on the steering clutch and the brake housing.

2. Fasten a hoist and Tooling (A) to final drive (4) .
3. Put the final drive in position on the steering clutch and the brake housing. Install bolts (6)
and (7) .
4. Remove Tooling (A) from the final drive.

5. Install two bolts (1) .
6. Install drain plug (2) .
7. Fill the final drive with oil to the correct level.
End By:
a. Install the axles. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle - Remove and Install".
b. Connect the tracks. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Track - Connect".

Start By:
A. Separate the tracks. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Track - Separate".
B. Remove the axles. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle - Remove and Install".
NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop
Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids in Caterpillar machines.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

1. Drain the oil from the transmission and the bevel gear housing.
2. Turn the final drive until plug (2) is on the bottom. Drain the oil from the final drive
housing.
3. Remove bolts (1) from the top of the final drive.
4. Adjust bracket (3) until the bracket is against the stop on Tooling (A) .

5. Fasten a hoist and Tooling (A) to final drive (4), as shown.
Note: Do not remove bolts (6) that hold the steering clutch and brake to the final drive.
6. Remove bolts (5) and (7). Remove the final drive and the steering clutch as an assembly.
The weight of the final drive, steering clutch, and brake assembly is 544 kg (1200.0 lb).

A. Separate the final drive, the steering clutches, and the brakes. Refer to Disassembly and
Assembly, "Final Drive, Steering Clutch, and Brakes - Separate".
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the disassembly procedure, the exterior of the
component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal
mechanism.

1. Remove bolts (1) and plate (2) .
2. Remove housing (3) .
3. Remove six plates (4) and the five discs from hub (5) .

4. Remove two plugs (6) from hub (5) .
5. Remove the six bolts that hold hub (5) in place through the plug holes. Remove the hub.
6. Remove ring (7) from hub (5). Remove bearing (9) and retainer (8) from the hub as an
assembly.
7. Remove retainer (8) from bearing (9) .

8. Remove piston (10). Remove seals (11) and (12) from the piston.
9. Remove ring (14) from hub assembly (13) .

10. Fasten a hoist and Tool (A) to housing (15). Remove the brake assembly from hub assembly
(13). The weight of the brake assembly is 86 kg (190.0 lb).
11. Remove bearing (17) and race (16) from housing (15) .

12. Remove three rings (18) from hub assembly (13) .
13. If necessary, remove bearing (19) from the hub assembly.
Personal injury can result from parts under high spring pressure.
Spring force can cause parts to come off suddenly. Contact your
Caterpillar dealer for disassembly instructions before removing any
parts.
Note: Bolts (22) hold a spring under compression behind the piston. Bolts (20) must be
removed before bolts (22) .
14. Remove bolts (20) and plate (21) from housing (15) .

15. Remove spring (25) and ring (24) from housing (15) .
16. Remove four plates (26) and three discs (23) from the housing.
Personal injury can result from parts under high spring pressure.
Spring force can cause parts to come off suddenly. Contact your
Caterpillar dealer for disassembly instructions before removing any
parts.
Note: Bolts (22) hold a spring under compression. Loosen the bolts slowly and loosen the
bolts evenly.
17. Remove six bolts (22) and manifold assembly (27) from housing (15) .

18. Remove seals (29) and (30) from manifold assembly (27) .
19. If necessary, remove bearing race (28) from the manifold assembly.
20. Remove piston (31) from the housing.
21. Remove O-ring seal (32) .

1. Replace all parts that are damaged or worn.

2. Install two springs (1) in housing (2) . Install the two springs so that the concave sides face
each other.
3. Put piston (3) in position in housing (2) .
4. Install O-ring seal (4) in housing (2) .
5. If race (6) was removed from manifold assembly (5) , lower the temperature of race (6) ,
and install race (6) in manifold assembly (5) .
6. Install seals (7) and (8) on manifold assembly (5) . Install the seals on the manifold
assembly with the lip of the seals, as shown. Put clean oil on the lip of the seals.

7. Align the oil holes in manifold assembly (5) with the holes in housing (2) . Install the
manifold assembly and six bolts (9) .
This is the correct method for making new seal rings ready for installation.

This is the wrong method for making new seal rings ready for installation.
NOTICE
New seal rings must be preloaded before they are installed to prevent
them from being damaged or broken. There is a correct method to
preload new seal rings prior to installation. Place your hands on each
end of the seal ring, and pull (wind) the ends several inches past each
other or until they almost make contact. Use care to keep the ring
shaped like a circle. This will make an even bend (or ring "set") all
around the ring. When the seal ring is in the groove of the hub, the
ends must butt together lightly. Do not bend the seal ring. This does
not make an even bend all the way around the ring.
Do not attempt to use this method to preload a used seal ring. Also, do
not use this procedure for cast iron seal rings. This will cause used or
cast iron seal rings to break.
8. If bearing (12) was removed, heat the bearing to a maximum temperature of 120°C (248.0°
F) for a maximum of eight hours. Install the bearing on hub assembly (10) . The bearing
must be seated squarely on the hub assembly after the bearing has cooled.
9. Install three rings (11) on hub assembly (10) .

10. Lower the temperature of race (13) . Install the race in housing (2) .
11. Fasten a hoist and Tooling (A) to housing (2) . Lower the housing in position on hub
assembly (10) .
12. Heat bearing (14) to a maximum temperature of 120°C (248.0°F) for a maximum of eight
hours. Install the bearing on hub assembly (10) . Make sure that the bearing is seated
squarely on the hub assembly after the bearing has cooled.
13. Install ring (15) on the hub assembly.
