Axle Housing, Axle Shaft, and Wheel Flange - Remove

Removal Procedure
Start By:
a. Remove the axle from the machine. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle - Remove".
NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service
Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
1. Drain the oil from the axle. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Axle Oil (Rear) -
Change".

Note: Put location marks on the axle housing, brake cylinder assemblies, and the center housing for
assembly purposes.
2. Position suitable blocks under the axle in order to support the sections during removal. Attach a
suitable lifting device onto the axle housing. The weight of the axle housing is approximately 147 kg
(325 lb). Remove bolts (1).
3. Remove axle housing (2) from brake cylinder assembly (3).
4. Repeat Steps 2 through 3 for the other side.

Start By:
a. Remove the axle housing, the axle shaft, and the wheel flange from the axle. Refer to
Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle Housing, Axle Shaft, and Wheel Flange - Remove".
b. Remove the final drive planetary from the axle. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final
Drive Planetary - Remove".

1. Remove axle shaft (1). Remove sleeve (3). Use Tooling (B) in order to remove retaining
ring (2) from sleeve (3).
2. Remove axle shaft (4).

3. Remove bolts (7) and discard bolts (7). Remove locking plate (6). Use Tooling (A) in order
to remove spanner nut (5).

4. Remove ring gear (8).

5. Remove retaining ring (9) and ring gear hub (10) from ring gear (8).

6. Remove wheel flange (11).
Note: Bearing cone (12) will fall out of wheel flange (11) when wheel flange (11) is
removed.

7. Remove seal (16) from wheel flange (11). Use a suitable hammer and a punch in order to
remove bearing cups (13) and (15). Remove O-ring seal (14).

8. Remove spacer (17) and bearing cone (18).

9. If necessary, remove seal (19) and bushing (20).

Start By:
a. Remove the axle housing, the axle shaft, and the wheel flange from the axle. Refer to
Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle Housing, Axle Shaft, and Wheel Flange - Remove".
b. Remove the final drive planetary from the axle. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final
Drive Planetary - Remove".

1. Remove axle shaft (1).

2. Remove bolts (4) and remove locking plate (3). Use Tooling (A) in order to remove spanner
nut (2).

3. Remove ring gear (5).

4. Remove retaining ring (6) and ring gear hub (7) from ring gear (5).

5. Remove wheel flange (8).
Note: Bearing cone (9) will fall out of wheel flange (8) when wheel flange (8) is removed.

6. Remove seal (13) from wheel flange (8). Use a suitable hammer and a punch in order to
remove bearing cups (10) and (12). Remove O-ring seal (11).

7. Remove spacer (14) and bearing cone (15).
8. Remove axle shaft (16). Remove sleeve (18). Use Tooling (B) to remove retaining ring (17)
from sleeve (18).

9. If necessary, remove seal (19) and bushing (20).

Start By:
A. Remove the axle housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle Housing, Axle Shaft,
and Wheel Flange - Remove".
NOTICE
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.
Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before you begin the disassembly procedure, the exterior
of the components should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the

internal mechanism. Precision components can be damaged by contaminants or by dirt. Perform
disassembly procedures on a clean work surface. Keep components covered and protected at all
times.
1. Remove plates (1) , brake discs (2) , and brake hub (4) from the axle housing. Remove
dowels (3) .

Personal injury can result from being struck by parts propelled by a
released spring force.
Make sure to wear all necessary protective equipment.
Follow the recommended procedure and use all recommended tooling to
release the spring force.
2. Remove bolts (8) . Remove the bolts and springs (9) as an assembly. Use a suitable pry bar
and remove brake piston (7) from brake cylinder assembly (5) . Remove O-ring seals (6)
from brake piston (7) . Repeat this step for the opposite side.

3. Remove bolts (10) from brake cylinder assembly (5) .

Note: Before you remove brake cylinder assembly (5) , make location marks for installation
purposes.
4. Remove brake cylinder assembly (5) .
5. Repeat Step 3 and Step 4 for the opposite side.
6. Remove the differential and bevel gear assembly (11) from the bevel gear side of the center
housing.
