Hollywood’s Vietnam: How Critics and Audiences Responded to the Vietnam War G...Jennifer Freilach
This four part senior project takes a comprehensive look at articles published in the Los Angeles Times and New York Times to determine how and why critics reviewed essential films about the Vietnam War. It thereby highlights the trends that emerged in their reaction to them. The first section analyzes critics’ response to Coming Home (1978). As the first major film with direct reference to Vietnam, Coming Home posed a unique problem for film critics. The second section analyzes the second major film about Vietnam, The Deer Hunter (1978). The majority of newspaper critics defended Cimino’s epic against negative claims that the film was historically inaccurate. Since Coming Home and The Deer Hunter qualified in the same Academy Award year, it is necessary to talk about their popular reception together, in a third, separate category. The final section of this essay emphasizes the shift in critics’ response to Platoon (1986). Instead of focusing on the inaccuracies presented in the film, newspaper critics largely praised it as the first real attempt at a Vietnam War film. Since this essay is not a filmography, numerous films are not mentioned in detail; the three films discussed stand as representations for the types of reviews that films in the Vietnam War genre received.

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.

Welcome to the new Mizzima Weekly !
Mizzima Media Group is pleased to announce the relaunch of Mizzima Weekly. Mizzima is dedicated to helping our readers and viewers keep up to date on the latest developments in Myanmar and related to Myanmar by offering analysis and insight into the subjects that matter. Our websites and our social media channels provide readers and viewers with up-to-the-minute and up-to-date news, which we don’t necessarily need to replicate in our Mizzima Weekly magazine. But where we see a gap is in providing more analysis, insight and in-depth coverage of Myanmar, that is of particular interest to a range of readers.

Catalogue For Small Scale Research Project
1. Catalogue
Films:
1. “Full Metal Jacket” directed by Stanley Kubrick (1987) Focus Film- I chose Full Metal
Jacket as my focus film because I think it is the grittiest and horrific portrayal of the
Vietnam War, I think this is mostly due to Kubrick’s indescribably amazing directing.
The entire film is iconic and in your face which make it the best film for my chosen
question. There is also a good amount of resources that can be used for any Kubrick
film because he was such a Well-known and iconic director. It’s also a bit of a cult
film within the war film genre.
2. “Platoon” directed by Oliver Stone (1986) -I chose Platoon because it is the first
“real” film about the Vietnam War and is the first Vietnam War film to follow a group
and soldiers and portray the true horrors. It is also perceived as one of the most
iconic war films of all time.
3. “Hamburger Hill” directed by John Irvin (1987) –I chose Hamburger Hill because it
was made during the same period and also is a film based solely on a real event
which was a huge tragedy with the Vietnam War. Another reason I thought this film
was good for my project is because it’s a relatively unknown film, in comparison with
Full Metal Jacket and Platoon.
Books:
4. “Stanley Kubrick: The Complete Films” written by Paul Duncan, published by Taschen
GMBH 2003- Gave a very in depth look at Kubrick’s films and gave some good
information for Full Metal Jacket as well as his whole filmography. Describes his
directing style very well and his style of film making
5. “Kubrick: Inside a film artist’s maze” written by Thomas Allen Nelson, published by
Indiana University Press 2000- Not as detailed as Stanley Kubrick: The Complete films
but did still give a lot of information about his films just not as much as the other
book. Was still very helpful in giving basic information on Kubrick and his films
6. “From Hanoi to Hollywood: The Vietnam war in American Film” edited by Linda
Dittmar an Gene Michaud, published by Rutgers university press new Brunswick
London 1997-An extremely helpful book that was looking at my exact topic area and
gave very useful information about Vietnam War films and about their social and
political value.
Websites:
7. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnam_War_in_film05.11.11- A list of Vietnam War
films and dates, helpful in selecting the films I was doing and also gave dates.
2. 8. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnam_War05.11.11- A useful back knowledge of key
events, dates, army strength and overall outcomes. Particularly helpful for
hamburger hill because it was a real attack so the facts were useful assuring the
realism of the film
9. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000040/28.10.11- A list of all of Kubrick’s films
which was very useful when talking about his directing style and his background as a
director.
10. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Hamburger_Hill30.10.11- Very useful in
giving information and statistics about the battle hamburger hill, similar to the page
about the Vietnam war but more in depth information on the particular attack
Extracts:
11. Opening scene of Full Metal Jacket: 00.00.11-00.01.29- a great scene in showing the
de-humanising of them and making them into soldiers as it is the first main step
12. Mickey Mouse Song, Full Metal Jacket:01.46.32-01.48.15- a fantastic extract that
shows the soldiers grasping hold of their child hoods because they feel as though it
has been taken from them
13. War Face, Full Metal Jacket:00.04.03-00.04.26- a excellent scene that shows the
breakdown in Jokers mind, shows how he wants to be something and his aggression
that he isn’t what he wants to be
14. Extract from Full Metal Jacket: Between Good and Evil on the extras from the
DVD:00.14.32-00.16.07
15. Dance mother f****r dance, Platoon: 00.46.23-00.48.01- a brilliant clip that shows
Taylor’s breakdown and what the war has actually done to him
16. Elias Death, Platoon: 01.15.53-01.17.22- a fantastic scene that shows the sheer
emotion of his will to live and is a very compelling scene to watch
17. Racist Brawl, Hamburger Hill: 01.11.12-01.11.35- a good scene in showing the
differences between the ethnicities and their racial conflict
Video Resources:
18. Documentary about Full Metal Jacket on the DVD extras of the fim- a very insightful
in depth look into Full Metal Jacket and raises some keys points that Kubrick was
trying to raise within the film and also gives a very good explanation of him himself
and his need for perfection
Picture Resources:
19. Propaganda poster teaser for Full Metal Jacket- an interesting teaser poster
that is mimicking the famous Uncle Sam recruitment poster which would
be instantly recognisable to most people drawing their attention to the
film.
3. 20. Front Cover for Full Metal Jacket- the front cover is a clear picture of the
main character and shows his “Born to Kill” writing and peace button very
clearly. His indirect view symbolises that he has had a dark and harrowing
experience within the war.
21. Platoon Elias death picture- This picture is the most iconic from the film
and shows the true emotion that comes from the film. Again the focus
character of the picture is looking away from the audience although
this is more because he is looking at god because he’s dying but still
the same principle as the Full Metal Jacket image
22. Platoon comparison to the war picture- This image is extremely
interesting because it shows the clear inspiration for the shot. It adds
a sense of realism because it was someone’s actual action to the war.
23. Picture of Chris Taylor at the begining of Platoon- this shows the
innocence of the Chris before he has actually experienced the war;
he seems to look younger and scared.
24. Picture of Chris Taylor at the end of Platoon- a completely
different persona to that of the picture of him at the beginning
of the film, clearly depicts his change from new soldier to
veteran and he seems a lot more comfortable as a soldier
Unused sources:
25. Real picture from Vietnam war- Wasn’t used because I instead used the picture
comparing platoon to a real picture which clearly showed the realism as well as
being a contemporary image. The other image was just as compelling but was more
relevant as it directly compares it to platoon.
26. The Cinema Book 2nd edition BFI publishing 1999- wasn’t helpful at looking at war films as a
genre although it looked at most other genres. Didn’t hint at it as a genre and didn’t list
many films.
27. Brushing teeth, Hamburger Hill: 00.18.05-00.19.54- although it is a very good scene
which shows a different side to the soldiers I felt as though it didn’t really help prove
4. the point within my essay. Especially as I referred to Hamburger Hill in a racial
context and this scene is not a scene relating to ethnicity.
Without these three sources I still had ample material to use to study my topic in depth
and good visual sources to show the point I was making with film extracts, pictures or
stills. I felt as though these sources were either not necessary or didn’t provide with any
valid or worthwhile information.
