Tea was introduced to Japan in the 12th century by a Buddhist monk who learned of it in China. Tea ceremonies became an important part of Japanese culture, focused on principles of harmony, respect, purity and tranquility. Tea ceremonies were held in simple tea houses and followed specific rituals for preparing and drinking the tea in a polite, respectful manner. Tea ceremonies were practiced by monks, samurai, noblemen and later spread to rural communities as well.
