This document provides instructions for a case study assignment on therapeutic communication. Students are asked to watch a video case study between a nurse and client. They then record the conversation, labeling parts as therapeutic or non-therapeutic verbal and non-verbal communication. For each label, students provide a rationale and suggest an alternative response that could have been more therapeutic. Finally, students write a paragraph about how they would feel if they were the client. The overall goal is for students to identify therapeutic and non-therapeutic communication techniques and congruency between verbal and non-verbal communication.
