Case Study: Management Information System at Dell
Management information system involves the information system and the organization. MIS
begins where computer science ends. Computer scientists deserve accolades for developing and
delivering even more advanced forms of information technology: hardware technology; software
technology; and network technology. Yet because no technology implements itself, there is more
to MIS than just information technology. MIS has dimensions. The four interrelated dimensions
of MIS are as follows: First, MIS involves not just information technology, but also its
instantiation; second, MIS involves, as reactive and inextricable elements, both an information
system and its organizational context; third, MIS involves information technology as a form of
intellectual technology; and fourth, MIS involves the activities of a profession or corporate
function which are integral to the essence of what MIS is (Currie & Galliers, 1999).
Dell Computer Corporation: Company Background
Dell Computer Corporation is a major manufacturer of personal computers, computer
peripherals, and software. Among the leading producers of computers in the world, Dell sells its
products directly to customers through the Internet and mail-order catalogues rather than through
retail outlets. The company is based in Round Rock, Texas. At Dell Computers, customers are
brought into the product planning and manufacturing processes, with all employees encouraged
having contact with customers. Through effective collaboration across boundaries, ideas can be
shared about product designs and value propositions. The result is faster and more customer-
focused product and service innovation. To produce the capacity for this, considerable attention
must be placed on organizational structures, processes, skills and culture. Such elements may
need a radical overhaul in established companies (Dennis & Harris, 2002). Dell was founded in
1984 by Michael Dell. In 1983, during his freshman year at the University of Texas, he bought
excess inventory of RAM chips and disk drives for IBM personal computers from local dealers.
He resold the components through newspaper advertisements at prices far below retail cost. By
1984, his sales totalled about $80,000 a month. In April 1984, Dell dropped out of school to
launch his company (Ford, Honeycutt, & Simintiras, 2003).
The new company soon began manufacturing its own IBM-compatible computers under the
name PCs Limited. Because Dell sold computers directly to users through advertisements in
magazines and catalogs, the company could price its machines lower than those sold through
retail stores. Sales reached nearly $6 million during the companys first year, climbing to $34
million the following year. By 1987, Dell was the leading mail-order computer company in the
United States. In that year, it created a sales force to target large corporations and began adding
international offices to capture the direct-mail market ou.

Over-running volume of data is a problem that should be addressed by data management and storage management. Data is being constantly collected but poorly analyzed which leads to excessive amounts of data occupying storage and delay in operations which inevitably affect production, sales and profits. If this remains unresolved, current data may have to be moved to external storage and recovered if needed. There is also the risk of data not being encoded into computers and thus will remain in manual state. This can be a case of redundant or extraneous data that is not yet cleaned and normalized by operations managers with the guidance of IT. This situation is known as data overload where companies actually use only a fraction of the data they capture and store. Many companies simply hoard data to make sure that they are readily available when they are needed. This negatively impacts the Corporation when assessing data relevance, accuracies and timeliness (Marr, 2016).
Software
The Largo Corporation (LC) seems to running on an enterprise resource planning system that is probably as long as 20 years old. Initially, LC has had success with the old system because they were able to establish themselves in various industries such as healthcare, media, government, etc. But due to various concerns, the Corporation is currently running on an outdated system because it is unable to provide services that keeps the Corporation a float. The LC is losing revenue and customers. Complete data without analysis is invaluable because, no information and insights can be produced that will support decisions. Customer data should lead to the best marketing and sales campaigns. The Corporation needs to recognize its weaknesses and implement changes to their software by incorporating funding for a new system that is reliable, secure, and has the ability to run on integrated systems; all of which will streamline data organization and analysis for the enterprise. (Rouse, n.d).
Network/Telecommunications
The network that was built in the 1980’s has become slow and unreliable affecting business operations. The problems caused by the old network are; lack of integration and communication between departments affecting the work flow, supply vs. demand, and inability to analyze data to carry out these operations. The Corporation should have taken into consideration the growth of the company by expanding and upgrading their networks along with their services. They should also take into consideration the number of departments, the number of users and their skill level, storage and bandwidth, and budget (Rasmussen, 2011). The current network does not allow employees to connect on their mobile devices which restricts flexibility and places limitations on productivity and portability.

Culture Change at IBMIBM began in 1914 as a maker of cheese slicer.pdfshakilaghani
Culture Change at IBM
IBM began in 1914 as a maker of cheese slicers, scales, and tabulating machines.
Thomas Watson, its founder who became famous for the "Think" watchword, created the
company on three values called "Basic Beliefs:" "respect for the individual," "the best customer
service," and "the pursuit of excellence." Based on these values, IBM grew into one of the great
industrial giants of the world, routinely hailed as a "best managed company."
By the late 1980s and the early 1990s, however, IBM's enormous success had an unintended
consequence. The firm became complacent; its basic beliefs provided a rationale for stability.
"Respect for the individual" had morphed into an entitlement mentality where lifetime
employment was reinforced by cultural norms. The "pursuit of excellence" gave way to
corporate arrogance and a failure to listen to customers or the marketplace because IBM knew
what was right. Finally, its devotion to large, centralized computer systems rather than PC-based
distributed architectures led to its downfall. IBM's stock price dropped 75 percent between
August 1987 and September 1993.
To turn things around, IBM appointed Lou Gerstner CEO in 1991. When asked how he would
lead IBM, this former GE executive retorted: "The last thing IBM needs right now is a vision."
Over the next few years, Gerstner cut IBM's workforce in half, abolished lifetime employment,
and refocused business strategy from hardware to software and services. The spectacular success
that followed is regarded as one of the great turnarounds in business history.
So what would you do as the CEO who followed Gerstner? Sam Palmisano, a lifetime IBM
employee, was appointed CEO in 2002. He strongly believed that IBM's continued success
depended on re-laying its foundation. "We couldn't be casual about tinkering with the DNA of a
company like IBM. We had to come up with a way to get the employees to create the value
system, to determine the company's principles. Watson's Basic Beliefs, however distorted they
might have become over the years, had to be the starting point."
To clarify and shift IBM's culture, Palmisano orchestrated a process that began with the
corporation's top 300 executives. Together, they generated the basic categories for the new
values, including respect, customer, excellence, and innovation. These categories were tested in
focus groups and broad surveys with more than 1,000 employees across levels, locations, and
functions. Based on this input, three proposed valuescommitment to the customer, excellence
through innovation, and integrity that earns trustwere submitted to "Values Jam," a 72-hour
process where all employees at IBM were invited to comment on the proposed values via IBM's
intranet. Values Jam organized employee discussion around four forums. A company values
forum asked general questions about the importance of values. A "first draft" discussion forum
asked for reactions to the three proposed values. A third forum asked abo.

You are working for FedEx. They have asked you to work on a database for all things packages.
This database has a few different tables in it and also works in and around a few different
applications. You will see some of them noted in a question. When you look at packages, there's
a lot of constraints out there we have to deal with to make sure all of our information is correct
and we don't get any bad errors that harm our trucks or fail to send the package from some sort
of error in the label information.
Density of the package is within an appropriate limit for our truck (note that density involves all
four of length, width, height, and weight that you are entering)
Email address is a string (a data type)
Email address contains an @ sign somewhere in the middle, and a "." after the @ sign, separated
by at least one character and not immediately at the end, verified by sending a quick email to the
address to confirm it
Width is less than or equal to Length Only one package goes to a destination, which means the
combination of all things having to do with the address (which is multiple fields) must be distinct
from all other addresses in that table.
Length, Width, Height, and Weight are all >0. Again, consider this from the perspective of any
one of these.
Length, Width, Height, and Weight all determined to be NOT NULL. Consider this from the
perspective of any one of these.
Determining the package can fit on the truck, managed by a Tetris like application on your

ZIP Code has exactly five characters
Nothing about the sender and the recipient is the same (except possibly the city, state, ZIP)

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

Case Study Management Information System at Dell Management infor.pdf
In that year, it created a sales force to target large corporations and began adding
international offices to capture the direct-mail market outside the United States (Ford, Honeycutt,
& Simintiras, 2003). While the company continued
2. to grow rapidly; Dell experienced a series of setbacks that hurt profits. In 1990, the company
began selling computers through retail stores, an effort it abandoned in 1994. In 1991, Dell
launched a line of notebook computers, but quality problems and inadequate production planning
forced the company to stop selling for a year. In 1994, Dell launched a new line of notebook
computers and expanded efforts to increase overseas sales. Dell also began focusing on the
market for servers, which used the computers to run local area networks. By the late 1990s, Dell
was firmly in place as the worlds number one direct seller of computers. More than 50 percent of
the companys computer sales transactions took place via its website, which generated worldwide
sales in excess of $40 million a day (Ford, Honeycutt, & Simintiras, 2003).
Information Processing Tools
Information processing or Data processing is the analysis and organization of data. It is used
extensively in business, engineering, and science and an increasing extent in nearly all areas in
which computers are used. Businesses use data processing for such tasks as payroll preparation,
accounting, record keeping, inventory control, sales analysis, and the processing of bank and
credit card account statements. Engineers and scientists use data processing for a wide variety of
applications, including the processing of seismic data for oil and mineral exploration, the
analysis of new product designs, the processing of satellite imagery, and the analysis of data
from scientific experiments (Thierauf, 1978).
Data processing is used extensively in business, engineering, and science and to an increasing
extent in nearly all areas in which computers are used. Data processing is divided into two kinds
of processing: database processing and transaction processing. A database is a collection of
common records that can be searched, accessed, and modified, such as bank account records,
school transcripts, and income tax data. In database processing, a computerized database is used
as the central source of reference data for the computations. Transaction processing refers to
interaction between two computers in which one computer initiates a transaction and another
computer provides the first with the data or computation required for that function. Most modern
data processing uses one or more databases at one or more central sites (Thierauf, 1978).
Transaction processing is used to access and update the databases when users need to
immediately view or add information; other data processing programs are used at regular
intervals to provide summary reports of activity and database status. Examples of systems that
involve all of these functions are automated teller machines, credit sales terminals, and airline
reservation systems (Thierauf, 1978).
The information processing tools that Dell uses include computers, the internet, maps,
spreadsheets, models, and databases. For the operational level of Dell, the most appropriate tool
for information processing is maps. Through the said information processing tool, decisions on
3. how to operate the
organization can be initialized and made. Maps can be used to determine which country/place
information will be acquired from, it can also assist in determining the demographic level of
people and information will be gathered. Maps can be in the form of charts that can also provide
necessary information. The information gathered in turn can assist in helping to decide how an
organization will be operated. For the tactical level of Dell, the most appropriate tool for
information processing is databases. Through the said information processing tool, the records
that can assist in finding out the strength and weakness of the company can be used to determine
the tactic that will be used by the organization. For the strategic level of Dell, the most
appropriate information processing tool is the internet or World Wide Web. Through the internet,
trends and strategies by other companies can be known. After analyzing the trends and strategies
used by other companies, an appropriate strategy can be formulated to use by the organization.
Inventory control systems
Individual businesses need, first and foremost, an efficient inventory control system. This
implies the minimum amount of inventory that will provide the consumers with what they need
whenever and wherever they need it. Effectiveness of the inventory system means basically
having an inventory mix that is most likely successful in satisfying consumer needs (Samli &
Sirgy, 1995). The inventory control systems used by Dell is up to date and reliable to prevent
problems to arise. The inventory system of Dell makes sure that anything the consumer need will
be available to them at any given time. It is also what the company uses to know if certain
products are still available or misuse of the inventory system may cost problems to the company.
Conclusion
Management information system involves the information system and the organization. Dell
benefits a lot from the management information system. The system helps the company create
strategies that will help the company conquer any problems and threats from competitors. The
system also assists the company in processing the needed information. Management Information
Systems also helps a company to create or update its inventory control system.
Recommendations
Since the MIS of a company is a vital part of its operations and its survival in the modern world,
it must be well updated and it must compete well with MISs competitors. The MIS of a company
should be created from high standards so that it can be of stiff competition against its
counterparts. The MIS system should help the company to achieve its goals and assist the
company in reaching its potential.
