Muntons is finalizing a £5.4 million anaerobic digestion plant aimed at reducing CO2 emissions from 27,264 to 26,605 tonnes annually, while converting up to 80,000 tonnes of liquid malt waste into organic fertiliser. The closed-loop system not only enhances sustainability by replacing artificial fertilisers but also regenerates 25% of the site's electricity demand and reduces transportation by 3,000 tanker movements per year. The project utilizes HRS heat exchangers, significantly improving efficiency through energy recovery and ensuring high-quality digestate that meets stringent standards.
