Michigan Tech strives to be a research institution of international stature. Following
are highlights of our endeavors to achieve this distinction.
❖ A team of students in the Aerospace Enterprise earned the privilege of having the
Department of Defense launch their custom-made satellite into orbit in 2013.
❖ Komar Kawatra, chair of the chemical engineering department, led a student research
team that developed a CO2 scrubber that captures carbon, binds it in a solid form, and
makes a product that can be used as a construction material.
❖ Michigan Tech students work on eight vehicles that include, in part, an underwater
remotely-operated vehicle, an electric motorcycle, a supermileage vehicle, an off-road
vehicle, and a solar-powered car.
❖ Michigan Tech has hosted the annual SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge for several
years. The challenge: reduce emissions while maintaining or boosting performance.
❖ The graduate engineering program is ranked 85th in the nation by US News & World
Report.
❖ The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International has
extended the accreditation of the School of Business and Economics for five years—a
distinction earned by less than 5 percent of the world’s business schools.
❖ With more than $58 million in sponsored research, Michigan Tech ranks number one
among universities in Michigan for invention disclosures per $10 million of research.
❖ The Michigan Campus Compact (MCC) honored civil engineering undergraduate
Tristram Hokenson and environmental engineering undergraduate Josh Strapec with
the 2011 Heart and Soul Award for their community service.
❖ Students Alex Cotton and Collin Veele developed and produced a device that prevents
young children from unbuckling their safety belts. It has been trademarked and has
received a provisional patent.
❖ Michigan Tech finished sixth in a field of 23 teams at the 2011 National Concrete Canoe
Competition, sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineering.
❖ Associate professor Greg Odegard advised a student team that designed a human-
powered, off-road wheelchair to help disabled people enjoy the outdoors.
❖ Tech placed second among forty-eight student teams that participated in the 2011
National Student Steel Bridge Competition. The contest challenges future structural
engineers to display their skills in steel design, fabrication, and teamwork.
❖ Michigan Tech ranks first in the nation for the number of participants (32 in the field)
in the Peace Corps Master’s International program, which combines a master’s degree
with service. Tech is also tops in the nation for the number of academic programs (8) in
which the opportunity is available.
❖ Michigan Tech’s graduate program is growing strong and by design. More than
60 percent of Tech PhD students complete their degrees, compared to 50 percent
nationally. More than 50 percent of PhD graduates end up in industry, compared to
41 percent at Tech’s peer high-research institutions.
