Creating a
Standout CV
Landing the Job
Interview
Establishing
Interpersonal
Communications
4. CV vs Resume vs Portfolio
Many people confuse to distinguish a CV, a Resume, and a Portfolio
CVs are more
extensive.
A curriculum vitae includes the full
extent of your academic credentials
and professional experience.
Resumes are
concise.
A resume is the summary of your
education, work history,
accomplishments and skills
related to the position you want.
Portfolios are
longer.
A portfolio document your work
samples, skills, abilities, and potential
in the future.
1 Page
(up to two, if
necessary)
2-3 Pages
(more compact
is better)
Can be longer
than 3 pages
(depends on what
you will showcase)
5. Formats of Curriculum Vitae
Different formats have different use according to your needs
6. Reverse
Chronological Order
The reverse-chronological is the most widely and
the most familiar format. This format displays your
education and work experiences from the most
recent to the oldest
The most
recognized CV
Great for showing
your career progress
Ideal if you’re
looking for a job in
the same field
Pros
Any gaps between
employments will
become very obvious
This CV format is not
ideal if you are
changing career path
Job hopping becomes
very apparent
Cons
7. Functional
A functional format emphasize your skills and other
qualifications rather than your professional experiences
Your skills and qualifications will be displayed at the
top of your CV in order of most relevant to least
relevant.
Good for hiding
large gaps in your
work history
Good for changing
careers
Good for
highlighting specific
skillset
Pros
Doesn’t show off a
clear career progress
This format is not
good if you lack skills
that come with
experience
This format is not
good if you lack
transferable skills
Cons
8. Combination
The combination format integrates both previous
formats. This format displays CV summary followed by
either a work experience section or a skills section.
Education section or additional skills can be added
after the skills section.
Good for showing
off skills
Helps you hide
employment gaps
Good if you have a
lot of experience in
one field
Pros
Not good if you don’t
have any experience
Not good if you want
to highlight your
education
Not good if you don’t
have a lot of skills to
highlight
Cons
10. What to do
Understand what the recruiters are looking for
Always customize your CV to the industry and
the desired qualifications
Only add in relevant and pertinent skills to the
job vacancy
For CVs and Resumes, more compact is better
Pay attention to the visual aspects (Font size,
template, color theme, etc)
Attach a cover letter/cover email before
sending
Make it Applicant Tracking System (ATS)
Friendly
