Carbohydrates can be classified as monosaccharides, disaccharides, oligosaccharides, or polysaccharides depending on whether they hydrolyze into single, two, few, or many simple sugar units. Monosaccharides include glucose and fructose. Sucrose is a common disaccharide that hydrolyzes into glucose and fructose. There are four aldotetroses, eight aldopentoses including ribose, arabinose, xylose and lyxose, and sixteen aldohexoses whose stereochemistry and configurations are important for distinguishing between them.
