Capstone Summary
In today's competitive market, companies are working tirelessly to implement Systems that
increase their productivity, and that requires innovation. Work in any company that uses a Software or
System Development Life Cycle and you will become familiar with the documentation that is so
heavily depended upon. These documents range from Business Requirements Documents, System
Requirements Documents, Process Change Documents, Testing Plans, and Testing Scripts.
My Video Capture System has now allowed Process Change Documents, Testing Plans, or
Testing Scripts to be revolutionized from a tedious and extremely time consuming task of walking an
End User through the Software or System in a step-by-step format. I have accomplished this task by
implementing software that allows a Business Analyst, Quality Engineer, Developer, or any other
qualified employee to share the ever evolving changes to Software or Systems inside the company.
I started by researching a Video Capture Software that had the necessary features required.
Those necessary features included adjustment of Resolution and File Format, Mouse Pointer Follow
and Click Highlighting, Sound Capture in “MPEG” Format, and Remote Desktop Capability. The
Video Capture Software, (Bandicam, 2014), did provide a Trial License for testing prior to purchase,
and was affordable.
After I selected what I felt was a viable Video Capture Software, (Bandicam, 2014). I began
utilizing the Trial License to ensure the necessary features worked in the PC Environment I was using
for this Project. I became confident in the (Bandicam, 2014) Video Capture Software and it's features
so I purchased a User License. I then implemented the Video Capture Software, (Bandicam, 2014), on
the source PC I was using with Remote Desktop to provide access to other PC's inside the network.

However, the Remote Desktop functionality was unsuccessful due to not having Windows Server 2008
R2 or higher on the network.
Once the Video Capture Software was in place and ready for use, I began researching Hardware
used for the Sound Capture Feature. The Sound Capture Hardware, (Logitech USB Headset H340,
2014), was affordable and easily installable on the PC Environment I used for this Project. It had the
Quality of sound required to provide easy to understand commentary that has now accompanied every
Video File.
After selecting a viable Sound Capture Hardware, (Logitech USB Headset H340, 2014), I began
testing it to ensure it provided the desired Quality. The candidate did provide the required Quality and
so I implemented it on one of the PC's inside the network that was connected to the Source PC using
Remote Desktop. I then attempted to ensure the Sound Capture Hardware worked via Remote Desktop
with the Video Capture Software, (Bandicam, 2014), on the Source PC. However, this was
unsuccessful due to not having Windows Server 2008 R2 or higher installed on the network.
After I implemented the Sound Capture Hardware, (Logitech USB Headset H340, 2014), I
began researching the Video Editing Software, (Adobe Premiere, 2014), that provided the necessary
features required. The necessary features did include a Timeline adjustment feature, Video Resolution
and Format saving feature, Noise Cancellation and Echo reduction feature, and was affordable and
easily installable on the Source PC I was using for this Project.
When the Video Capture Software, Sound Capture Hardware, and Video Editing Software were
all implemented and working mostly as intended. I began researching a Media Storage System, (Share
Point, 2014), to satisfy a Central Repository for users to be able to upload and share Video Files. The
Media Storage System I selected, (Share Point, 2014) did meet the necessary features required. Those
necessary features were an Upload Feature, Download Feature, Accommodating Storage Space,

Comment Feature, and an Update Log.
The Media Storage System, (Share Point, 2014), was affordable and easily installable on the PC
Network I used for this Project. When I identified (Share Point, 2014) as the Media Storage System
candidate I began testing it to ensure it met the requirements. The candidate did provide the required
features and I implemented it into the PC Network I was using for this Project.

Review of Other Work
Ever since the invention of the internet it has been used more or less as a repository for
information. What started as a simple way for employee's to share files has become an endless resource
for people all over the world. No longer are we required to go to a library or read a book to absorb
information or educate ourselves on a particular topic, with the internet we have all the information we
need from a simple click of a mouse button.
In 2005 (YouTube, 2014) was introduced to the world wide web and has become one of the
most successful websites of all time. While it may have started as a way for people to express
themselves online, it has become an almost limitless resource for people who want to learn. There are
instructional videos from how to put on make up, how to tie a tie, or even how to learn Java
programming.
(You Tube, 2014) has been providing the very same Video Capture System I have now
Implemented for almost 10 years with immeasurable success. End Users all over the world are using
their Smart Phones, Tablets, Digital Cameras, and even Screen Capturing Software, like I am using, to
record videos. These End Users then use (YouTube, 2014) as the Media Storage Software that allows
for a Centralized Repository and Distribution System.
End Users are still required to provide their own Video Capture Hardware or Software, and
Sound Capture Hardware. However, (YouTube, 2014) tackles two of the biggest pieces of the Video
Capture System, and that is Video Editing, and Media Storage. (YouTube, 2014) acts like an endless
vault that houses all of the Video Files that their End Users Upload and even provides the ability to
Download these Video Files.

(Online Expert, 2014), and (Test Out, 2014) are companies who employes professionals in their
respective fields to demonstrate the required knowledge or skills needed for students watching the
videos to take and pass Certification Exams or Professional Tests from many Technical Fields. Through
the use of Video Capture Hardware and Software, Sound Capture Hardware, Video Editing Software,
and Media Storage (Online Expert, 2014), and (Test Out, 2014), have evolved the learning process.
In times passed it was often required for a student to attend a College or University course to
get the type of instruction or education needed to pass these Certification Exams or Professional Tests.
Many books have been written by perfectly qualified professionals in their respective fields that are
intended to provide this instruction or education. However, that left many students who struggle with
reading or simply don't have the time necessary to attend a course, feeling frustrated or even forcing
them to choose a different career path.
With websites like (Online Expert, 2014) or (Test Out, 2014) there is a whole new world of
possibility for students of all types. You now have on-demand videos that you can watch at your own
convenience and can take on at your own pace. These videos range from just instructional talks about
theory or ideas, to actual walk through demonstrations of Software and Lab Environments. It's these
walk through demonstrations that I feel have greatly accelerate the world of Software and System
Development Life Cycles.
The (Microsoft, 2014) corporation employes many professionals in their respective field to
come and give what are known as (Microsoft Webinars, 2014) for corporate employee's. This is where
a professional instructor will give a walk through demonstration of a new type of Software or System,
or even an existing Software or System, that has undergone re-construction or has released a new
Version. In these (Microsoft Webinars, 2014) viewers are able to interact with the professional
instructor in real time and ask questions about process or functionality.

These (Microsoft Webinars, 2014) are then saved and shared among other potential viewers
who were unable to attend the (Microsoft Webinars, 2014) meeting. The (Microsoft, 2014) corporation
has several pieces of Software that they use to facilitate these (Microsoft Webinars, 2014), a couple of
examples is their (Lync, 2014) Instant Messenger Software that allows instructors to share their desktop
and present in real time to many potential viewers who are invited to the meeting using the Microsoft
Outlook contacts stored in a Microsoft Exchange Server.
(Lync, 2014) has built in Audio Conference Software that allows the Instructor to provide
commentary about the presentation, and also allows viewers to ask questions in real time. This allows
for corporations who invest in this Instant Messenger Software to give presentations and provide a
learning resource for their employee's. However, it does not satisfy the need for Video Editing Software
or Media Storage.
This is why Corporations are moving more to a Cloud Environment and depending more on
Desktop Virtualization companies such as (Citrix, 2014). These companies provide a way for you to
install Enterprise level versions of the Video Capture System I have impleted. Then use that Enterprise
level software across all the PC's in your network, without needing to use the processing power from
the PC's on your network. This enables Corporations to use what are known as Thin Clients, less
powerful PC's, and still gain the intended results that would require, Fat Clients, or much more
powerful PC's.
For my purposes it was not necessary for me to depend on Desktop Virtualization, it could be
required for a much larger implementation, or as an enhancement, of my Video Capture System.
(Microsoft, 2014) has a Document Management Software called (Share Point, 2014) which is used by
Corporations as a Central Repository for all types of Documentation that is used throughout the
Corporation. This has acted as the Media Storage Software for my project.

Project Rationale
In Corporations using the Software or System Development Life Cycle it is the responsibility of
Business Analysts, Quality Engineers, Process Managers, and Developers to produce Documentation
that outlines changes to Software or Systems. These documents are used for educating End Users of the
Software or Systems to aid them in completing their duties. The process of producing these Documents
is extremely time consuming and is often not performed because of the time it requires.
It can take several business days to complete an update to a System or Software Process
Document. If the employee producing this document is under a time constraint they are often
encouraged or obligated to cut corners. This leaves the Corporation as a whole weaker, especially the
End Users who has to research these changes on their own and may find themselves having to perform
their duties without proper instructions to do so.
In addition to the enormous time commitment the Software or System Process Document
updates require, they are also not all encompassing. A small portion of the process through a Software
or System may change, leaving the rest of the process in tact. However, updating this small piece in a
document can create confusion for the reader. If the employee responsible for updating the Software or
System Process Document isn't precise about exactly what has changed and making sure the document
as a whole is easy to understand, the reader may not be able to understand the intended changes in
Process.
The Video Capture System I have implemented is allowing the editing of existing Software or
System Process Videos. Recording a small video and using the Timeline Editing feature of the Video
Editing Software, (Adobe Premiere, 2014), you can accomplish this update without fear of confusion

for the intended viewer.
Along with System or Software Process Documents, Corporations depend on training
documents used to educate new employee's or employee's who are not familiar with a particular System
or Software. A Test Script may be used as a training document for new employee's, as a step-by-step
guide through the System or Software the Corporation is using. However, writing a training document
as an employee who already has intimate knowledge of the Software or System can be a real challenge.
New employee's do not have even a basic understanding of Software or Systems your
Corporation is using, especially if it is proprietary. A training document that is written by an
experienced employee may lack the detail necessary to help a new employee fully understand the
functionality of a System or Software. It is very easy for an experienced employee to refer to something
in Lingo, or Jargon, that a new employee is not familiar with.
It is also very difficult for an experienced employee to understand the perspective of someone
who has no knowledge of the System or Software your Corporation is using. The experienced
employee may refer to something in a way the new employee doesn't understand. The experienced
employee may also skip what seems like obvious steps, but may indeed create confusion for a new
employee. This is why so many training documents require companies to employe trainers to help their
new employees gain the necessary understanding of Software or System Functionality.
In my now implemented Video Capture System, there is no way for an experienced employee to
skip a step in the functionality of a Software or System. The experienced employee's steps are recorded
click by click with the Mouse Pointer Follow and Clicking Highlight feature. While it is still possible
for the experienced employee to use Lingo, or Jargon, the new employee is not familiar with. They are
now seeing a Video representation of those phrases and are more easily able to understand the
experienced employee's meaning.

Systems Analysis and Methodology
After performing the required research and testing of the Video Capture Software, I selected
(Bandicam, 2014). The (Bandicam, 2014) Software is typically used for recording Video Games that
will hook into the (Bandicam, 2014) Software itself using DirectX or OpenGL which allows
(Bandicam, 2014) to record the Games in Full Screen. However, (Bandicam, 2014) comes with a
feature called, Rectangle on a Screen, that allows a user to select a recording resolution manually, and
allows the user to capture their desktop or any screen without having to be hooked into the Software or
System directly.
(Bandicam, 2014) works with most USB Sound Capture Hardware, which allows flexibility and
less complication of the process when having to configure Sound Software to be compatible with
(Bandicam, 2014). The Video File Formats that (Bandicam, 2014) offers are usable in many popular
Video Editing Software’s, and allows for custom Resolutions. (Bandicam, 2014) works with Remote
Desktop, and allows you to save Audio Files separately from the Video Files in a , MPEG, Format.
Upon performing the required research and testing of the Sound Capture Hardware I selected
the (Logitech USB Headset H340, 2014). The (Logitech USB Headset H340, 2014) offered unbeatable
price for the Quality of the Sound Capturing it is capable of producing. It was easy to configure but
unfortunately did not work with (Bandicam, 2014) over a Remote Desktop Connection. It also included
an adjustable headset which makes it more comfortable and easy to use for the End Users.
I performed the required research and testing of the Media Storage System, and I selected
(Share Point, 2014). It provides the necessary Upload and Download features, while allowing the team
to maintain a Central Repository for all Video Files. It features an easy to use GUI that has Comments

and Change Logs on the Video Files uploaded by specific users.
After performing the required research and testing of the Video Editing Software, I selected the
(Adobe Premiere, 2014) software. (Adobe Premiere, 2014) provides a much easier to use GUI than
other comparative Video Editing Software. It also has the necessary Noise and Echo Cancellation,
Timeline Adjustment, and Resolution and File Format Saving Features.
Implementing the Video Capture System assumed a certain amount of experience and
understanding of the associated Hardware and Software involved. The configuration of Remote
Desktop and being able to use the (Bandicam, 2014) with the (Logitech USB Headset H340, 2014)
required a basic understanding of Windows Operating Systems, and Networking. However, we were
unsuccessful in utilizing Remote Desktop due to not having Windows Server 2008 R2 or higher
installed on the Network. The (Adobe Premiere, 2014) Software, was extremely complicated and
required a lot of experience before the End Users felt comfortable for day-to-day use.
The network bandwidth required for uploading and downloading substantially sized Video Files
at a reasonable speed can is costly. Configuring the (Share Point, 2014) Software required a basic
understanding of Storage Systems, and was costly as the size of the storage needed was significant. The
day-to-day use of the Video Capture System required users to practice being natural in their delivery of
the information. It is very common for a user to need to take several attempts of a particular example
before they are satisfied with the instruction provided.
However, after the users familiarized themselves with the Software and Hardware in the Video
Capture System. It is now far more efficient and helpful to the Corporation than any Word or Excel
document was. Users are able to transform Process Updates from days of work to hours. Test Scripts or
Training Documents are transformed from weeks of work into several days of work. Updating and
keeping accurate information is no longer potentially misleading or confusing for the End User, instead

it is an invaluable resource that greatly increases the productivity of the Corporation.
Goals and Objectives
The Goal of the Video Capture System revolved around increasing Productivity by
revolutionizing the way Corporations train and update their employee's on Process and System
Functionality. Decreasing the time it takes to create Process and System Functionality Documentation,
and increasing the Knowledge Repository of the Corporation.
The first Objective of the Video Capture System was to increase productivity by decreasing the
time required to create Process and System Functionality Documentation. Creating these documents in
a world without the Video Capture System, can take weeks and often suffers from poor execution due
to time constraints. End Users are often incapable of producing the quality necessary to meet the needs
of the Corporation because of the time required to produce manually typed Process or System
Functionality Documents is significant.
With the now implemented Video Capture System, End Users have the ability to update and
create Process or System Functionality Documentation rapidly. Multiple End Users can work together
on the exact same document by delegating specific Process or System updates to individuals. Where a
difference in detail focus and writing style could create a very difficult to follow and inconsistent
document before, now there is a record of exactly what is happening regardless of who is presenting.
Creating updates to existing Process or System Functionality Documentation has also
experienced increased efficiency. End Users are now able to cut out old Process or System clips, and
insert updated clips with the Video Editing Software, (Adobe Premiere, 2014), and are able to keep all
of the information flowing consistently.

The second Objective of the Video Capture System was to revolutionize the way Corporations
train their employee's. Providing more easily understood and better examples of changes to Process or
Systems has increased the competency of the Corporation as a whole. End Users have gained the
ability to demonstrate changes in both a visual representation but also a verbal representation. This key
verbal representation has been missing from previous Process or System Functionality Documentation.
End Users are now able to explain the reasoning behind the Process or System changes while
they are demonstrating them visually. More importantly End Users are able to provide even more
detailed steps than before because there is no assumed steps. Potential viewers, such as new
employee's, are no longer confused by simple typo's or assumed steps. As the End User is
demonstrating the changes they are documenting, their every click is recorded for them and the viewer
can see the required steps as they are happening.
New Employee's will now be able to perform these System or Process functions without the
need of close supervision. This will give them the required understanding of how to access and
navigate through the Corporations Systems in a user friendly way that also educates them on the
Process of the Corporation. These new employee's can even be used to pre-stage System or Process
functions for more experienced employee's who are pressed for time.
This allows Business Analysts, Quality Engineers, Developers, and Process Management teams
to hire contractors at a more economical cost to the company and accelerate their training. A contractor
can become a much needed answer to teams that are struggling to meet the demand of the Corporation,
and still being able to stay within their budget. This provides more opportunity for lesser skilled or
fresh to market job seekers who are looking to gain experience. Where a more experienced employee
would be required to dedicate significant time to training these contractors, the Video Capture System
has significantly reduced the training demands on more experienced employee's.

The Third Objective of the Video Capture System wass to increase the knowledge repository of
the Corporation. With the implementation of the Media Storage Solution, (Share Point, 2014), users are
capable of sharing Video Files in a fast and manageable environment. Employee's now have access to
ever improving Video Files and can engage in updates of their own, because of the upload and
download logging feature. Employee's can keep an accurate understanding of what files have been
updated and why due to the comments associated with each Video File.
The Video Editing Software, (Adobe Premiere, 2014), has eliminated the need to have multiple
file versions constantly piling up and creating clutter. A single Process or System Change Video File
can be used continuously with a version update in the comments section. An End User can download a
Process or System Change Video File, and edit it by combining the new Video File they just created.
The Process or System Change Video File is updated and the changes are available for anyone to view,
but remain in one Video File.
The Video Capture System has allowed multiple users to update a single Process or System
Change Video File because the steps being updated are visually shown to the potential viewer and
writing styles or detail focus do not disrupt the quality of the Video File.
The Video Capture System has allowed End Users to produce Process or System Change Video
Files much more rapidly than previous Documentation. This has allowed the Corporation to greatly
increase it's knowledge repository. End Users are more willing to create the needed Video File updates
as they take significantly less time and attention to detail than previous manually written System or
Process Functionality Documents.
Productivity as a whole can now be increased across the Corporations who implement the Video
Capture System. Because, the quality of the documentation will increase, the time to produce the
documentation will decrease, and there are more opportunities for contractors and lesser skilled job

seekers to learn and participate.
Project Deliverables
There were four Deliverables associated with the Video Capture System Project. These were
necessary to define the approach that was taken to achieve the Goal and Objectives of the Project. They
defined what Limitations or Defects that presented themselves throughout the development and
implementation. Provided a list of Unexpected Changes or Lessons Learned from the Project. Then
provided training to End Users on how to use the Video Capture System.
Project Scenarios were written and delivered to a Superior for review and sign-off before the
project began. These Scenarios provided a High-Level overview of what steps were required to achieve
the project Goal, Objectives, and Deliverables. The Scenarios were then included in the Project
Summary Report and assigned a value of Pass or Fail depending on the ability to achieve the project
Goal, Objectives, and Deliverables. New Scenarios were added during the Project Execution and
Controlling phase, and were added to the Project Summary Report.
A Limitations and Defects Document was produced that outlined all of the System Limitations
that were presented during the Planning, Execution, and Control phases of the project. There was also a
list of Defects that were found, if they were resolvable or not, and the ones that were resolvable, what
steps were taken to achieve the resolutions. Also included in the Limitations and Defects Document
was a recommendation for different Software or Hardware if their Limitations exceed acceptable
levels.
We were forced to seek out a new Video Capture Software, (Open Broadcaster Software, 2014),
once we discovered the size of the Video Files using, (Bandicam, 2014), were too big to be used with
(Share Point, 2014). However, we were able to resolve the Video File size limitation by using, (Open

Broadcaster Software, 2014). We were also forced to abandon the idea of using a Remote Desktop
client as the company does not use Windows Server 2008 R2 or higher. This, thankfully, was resolvable
as the Thin Clients were capable of running all required Software and Hardware for the Video Capture
System.
A Project Summary Report was delivered to a Superior for review and sign-off before the
project was closed. This Report included the Project Scenarios with a value of Pass or Fail, and a
detailed explanation of all Failed Scenarios, and suggestions for future projects to resolve them.
A Video Tutorial for End Users was produced to outline the Process, Software and Hardware
used in the Video Capture System. It included a detailed description of how to install and configure
each component, and a brief overview of their intended functions inside the Video Capture System.

The Video Capture System Project was not able to follow the proposed Timeline. The Timeline
was revised when we were presented with Limitations, and Defects in the Quality Assurance Testing
Phase that required additional time to be added to the Project. 10 days were added to the Project in the
Defect, and Limitations Resolution, and Validation Milestone. We were successful in completing the
Project and Validating that the Resolutions for Defects and Limitations that were suggested worked as
intended.

Project Development
The Video Capture System has accomplished the Deliverables, Objectives, and Goal of the
Proposal. Project Scenarios were delivered and signed-off on by my Superior. A Limitations and
Defects Document was produced, and submitted to my Superior. A Project Summary Report was
produced, and submitted to my Superior. A Video Tutorial on how to use the Video Capture System was
presented to the End Users. However, there was an increase in the time required to complete the
project, as well as some re-configuration of the Video Capture System.
We were presented with several problems in the Video Capture System Testing and
Documentation of Limitations and Defects Milestone of the Video Capture System Project. When we
initially selected and purchased a User License for the, (Bandicam, 2014), Video Capture Software,
Video File Sizes were not a concern. After integrating all of the Software and Hardware required to
produce the Video Capture System. We began the Video Capture System Test and Documentation of
Limitations and Defects Milestone. It became evident that the Video File Sizes produced by,
(Bandicam, 2014), would be too big to use with our Media Storage Software, (Share Point, 2014).
After several attempts to decrease the size of the Video Files being produced by changing
Resolution and File Formats, it became clear we would need to select a new Video Capture Software.
We were able to find another Video Capture Software, (Open Broadcaster Software, 2014) that
provided the required features and significantly reduced the Video File Sizes. This made it possible for
us to continue with the proposed Media Storage System, (Share Point, 2014).
We were also unsuccessful in establishing a Remote Desktop environment that the proposal had
put forth in the Project Scenarios. After researching and trying to Troubleshoot this problem, we

discovered that it is required for the Network being used to have Windows Server 2008 R2 or higher
for Remote Desktop to utilize the proposed functionality. However, it was originally thought that the
Thin Clients the company uses for End Users would be insufficient in running the Video Capture
System.
It was decided that upgrading the Network was far too expensive to suffice as a resolution. So,
we began testing the Video Capture System on the Thin Clients that were going to be connecting to a
Fat Client as was proposed in the Project Scenarios. The Thin Clients were capable of running the
Video Capture System and a Remote Desktop environment was no longer necessary to complete the
Video Capture System Project. Therefore the Remote Desktop requirement was removed from the
scope of the Video Capture System Project.
The Video Capture System Project was delayed by 10 days due to unanticipated requirements
changes from the proposed Timeline. The research and testing for the new Video Capture Software,
(Open Broadcaster Software, 2014), and the removal of Remote Desktop from the requirements scope
required an additional 10 days of integration, testing, and validation to be added to the project
Timeline.
End Users are now actively creating Video Files that are being used to accomplish the Goal of
the Project. These Video Files are being edited and revised on a constant basis as intended to provide
the most up to date documentation for the Corporation. Several teams throughout the Corporation are
using the Video Capture System to produce Process and System Functionality Videos that are helping
to educate and increase the productivity of the Corporation.
The current Video Capture System does accomplish the proposed Goal, however, there is room
for improvements. It has been suggested that we utilize Desktop Virtualization, using Virtual Machines
available in the Network Lab of the Corporation, to reduce the load on the Thin Clients being used by

the End Users in the Corporation. It is also suggested that we incorporate a way of saving these Video
Files to DVD's and adding a Table of Contents to allow potential viewers more navigation control over
the video's. There is also a potential for End Users to create distractions among other employee's while
using the Video Capture System and could require End Users to reserve Conference Room's to produce
their Video Files.

Conclusions
The Video Capture System was implemented successfully and achieved the desired Goal of the
Project. The Video Capture System Project did experience problems and unanticipated changes, but
they were resolved and validated. The Project Timeline did require 10 additional days to be added, and
there were changes to the scope of the Project. There are also suggestions for improvement to the Video
Capture System that may require future Projects.
The Video Capture System Project was received well and was considered a success by my
Superiors. I am now in charge of Improving and Maintaining the Video Capture System. I also provide
training to new End Users when necessary. The total cost of the Project was far out weighed by the
benefits it provided and End Users are much happier with the Video Capture System than the
previously manually typed documentation.
