Editor's Notes
Each slide has a few suggested introductory comments for you to make and then leads to a short video {1-4 minutes} prepared for our Stritch Learning Environment. Links may open up in a separate browser tab depending on the version used. In that case hit the PowerPoint icon to return to the next slide.
Helping people know how to get into Canvas is the #1 item to accomplish during orientation if they have not done that before. Reminding them that they use the same credentials as their main university accounts is useful. The middle bullet point which emphasizes that Canvas does not have a separate student fee like LiveText does can be used or not as you see fit.
The video link will show the university standard method for storing and accessing the required syllabus delivered to each class. Eventually all classes will have this minimum feature, but that may not be the case during all initial deployments in the summer of 2014.P.S. Keep in mind that variations will occur based on how different programs and instructors use Canvas.
This is an introduction to Canvas the company and product and why Stritch “stepped ahead of the pack” in going with the newest platform in this marketplace. Promote the idea that is both cutting edge but still similar to other products only easier for anyone who uses internet applications daily. Choose the video that suits your audience. The first is the best intro to the product. The second is a funky introduction to the company done by its founder Josh Coates. The third is a Apple style commercial.
This slide is meant to help you address the basic things that students need to have BEFORE they begin with Canvas: Their activated domain & E-Mail accounts - Access to a computer and network on a regular basis - & a recognition and plan to stay up to date on the approved versions of software and browser applications that account for many of the early support and success issues for students. {Emphasize the last link as something they can check on regularly to stay up to date} P.S. We do not talk about mobile access in this introduction, but it may come up as a question.

This slide introduces the Canvas course template, how it is generally configured at Stritch, and how you move around the screen to get to the features and content students need. P.S. Keep in mind that variations will occur based on how different programs and instructors use Canvas.

There are two types of situations where content may be blocked from student view that they should be aware of, and two different suggested pathways to resolve this issue when students encounter it. 1) Technical issues are addressed in the video provided here and can be addressed directly by students in most cases. Otherwise they can consult the main university help desk. 2) Course issues usually involve a setting to block the content temporarily that may be intentional or un-intentional by the instructor. Student might want to consult with them directly first.
The video here will help students do the initial work of describing themselves, (including adding a photo of themselves) and configuring their account for notifications and communications with others. Most of these setting will remain for all of their work within Canvas.
Encourage students to be pro-active about their issues within courses using Canvas. First this means learning for themselves. The link to the student guide is one place to start, but there are other guides that are provided there by Canvas and our own student site is filled with useful information. Technical issues requiring assistance should all start at the main university Help Desk. Student should also be encouraged to be proactive about communicating their issues before they fester and become a retention issue.
