CANSA continues with the traditional, annual celebration of CANSA volunteers this International Volunteers Day in December 2017. International Volunteers Day, celebrated annually on the 5th of December, was mandated by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985, to celebrate the power and potential of volunteerism. 2. Who are #Volunteers?
• Volunteers come in all shapes and sizes, but they all have
these things in common: willing, caring hearts and hands
ready to serve.
• They serve by donating time and energy for the benefit of
others in their community, as a social responsibility, rather
than for any financial reward.
• As a non-profit organisation we rely heavily on our +- 7 000
trained CANSA volunteers to help us in the fight against
cancer, in their local communities.

3. CANSA’s Volunteers
• CANSA’s volunteers are valued and
appreciated assets, helping staff at our
30 CANSA Care Centres across the
country, to educate local communities
about the importance of:
– awareness of the signs of cancer,
– regular cancer screening and
– living a balanced lifestyle to lower cancer
risk.
• They also provide care & support to
cancer patients and love ones, or assist
with administrative / fundraising tasks.

4. #AffectedByCancer #GivingBack
• Our volunteers come from different walks of life and
many have been personally affected by cancer – either
being cancer Survivors themselves or knowing someone
who is.
• Others simply seek to help relieve the cancer burden in
their communities.
Sharon Fransman: “Often cancer Survivors are just
looking for someone who is willing to listen. When you
volunteer you become one of the most important
companions on their cancer journey.”

5. CANSA’s Volunteers
CANSA volunteers are carefully selected,
trained and supported by volunteer Co-
ordinators.
Volunteers can choose to serve where
their strengths lie, and the relevant
training will be provided by CANSA Staff.

8. Phakamisa – Empowering Local Volunteers
• The Phakamisa project was
initiated in April 2011 between
AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals
and CANSA.
• The goal is to support the South
African healthcare system by
assisting the public sector in
ensuring the effective diagnosis,
treatment and management of
the leading cancer for women
and men in SA – breast cancer
and from 2017 also prostate
cancer.
Phakamisa offers an
opportunity for volunteers to
specialise in supporting breast
cancer patients empowering them
with knowledge and skills through
training and skills development.

• 238 functional Liaison Committees
• 72 committees in the development phase to become fully functional
Liaison Committees
• 2 311 members in volunteer leadership committees, 57% black,
43% white
• 4 995 contracted volunteers (leader volunteers included)
• Approximately 4 995 assisted ad hoc with specific projects or events
• 249* clustered orientation courses conducted for new volunteers
(*3-5 towns/communities clustered together to ensure cost effective volunteer
training)
• 1 090 in-service training workshops offered to volunteer groups

Mariëtte Loods Award
The annual Mariette Loots Cancer
Trust Awards embody the
commitment of volunteers to cancer
survivors and CANSA on a national
level. CANSA regional nominations
are forwarded to the Mariette Loots
Trust's selection committee. They
select the Merit and two main award
winners each year based on a
stringent grading system.
We salute all our committed volunteers as our cancer warriors who
selflessly give of themselves and their time to the cancer cause.
