2. Case history
3 year old entire male chocolate Labrador
Presented with severe pruritus.
Non seasonal
Routine flea control was maintained with a veterinary prescribed anti-flea product.
The dog is otherwise well
Diagnosed with atopic dermatitis based on the history, clinical signs and
intradermal allergy testing
Pruritus had been well managed for a time, however during the summer the
pruritus worsened and the dog failed to respond to additional drugs
(corticosteroids and ciclosporin) given to it to control it.

• Pustule cytology

• Negative for mites
Coat brushings
• Negative for flea dirt

8. WHAT IS YOUR DIAGNOSIS

9. Diagnosis
Superficial pyoderma and staphylococcal overgrowth syndrome and otitis externa
as secondary complications to the underlying atopic dermatitis

10. Treatment and outcome
Cefalexin.22mg/kg bid for 3 weeks
Ear drop containing fusidic acid, framycetin, nystatin and
prednisolone
