Canarsie Walking Tour
History of Canarsie
● Canarsie is a neighborhood in the southern part of
Brooklyn. Canarsie is surrounded by the neighborhoods
of East Flatbush, Flatlands, Mill Basin, Bergen Beach,
  and East New York.

● Canarsie was built on swamps near Jamaica Bay. It was
a fishing village through the 1800’s, until pollution
killed the oysters and edible fish there. In the 1920’s,
Southern Italian immigrants with Jews settled in the
  area.

● Canarsie means“fenced land” or “fort." in the Lenape
  Native American language.

Canarsie 1950 - 1990
● Canarsie's population reached three thousand people,
it was a suburban community where everyone knew
    everyone else.
● The Canarsie Courier is the oldest weekly publication
in Brooklyn. The Canarsie Courier was in heavy
    circulation during the mid 1900's.
● During the 1990’s, much of Canarsie’s white population
left to Staten Island, Long Island, and Queens, part of
a national urban phenomenon referred to by many as
    “white flight".
