Another interest of Remi Landau is calligraphy, which has markedly different roots and forms of expression in
the East and the West.
In Japan, a single piece of calligraphy recently went viral, as the nation entered a new Imperial era with the
stepping down of the Emperor from the Chrysanthemum Throne. This allowed his son Emperor Naruhito to take
the reigns. The name of the new era, replacing the Heisei era, was kept under tight wraps until April 1st, a month
before the new era began. This reflects the extreme importance given to the adopted Chinese characters, or kanji,
and their Japanese meaning, in defining a new course for the nation.
The Reiwa era, meaning order and harmony, was announced through Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga
holding up a calligraphic work that displayed the two characters in traditional black ink against a white
background. This work of art was created by a calligraphy specialist at the Cabinet Office and made publicly
available for use through digital mediums. The original placard will now go through a one year preservation
period at the National Archives before being transferred as a historical public record to be stored for posterity.
