Until recently, cities emerged organically but lacked smart design and advanced technology, leading to unsustainable megastructures housing over half of Earth's population. However, authenticity could be lost and new cities require holistic design considering sustainability, economy, environment and society. Future cities may be floating structures producing their own energy and food to address issues like overpopulation and climate change while existing as nature-technology symbioses.

Following the 2008 "Re-imaging Cities: Urban Design After the Age of Oil symposium, Penn IUR solicited manuscripts on environmental and energy challenges and their effect on the redesign of urban environments.
ROLE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN IMPROVING CONDITIONS OF SLUMS
This document outlines several models for using science and technology to improve conditions in slums, focusing on infrastructure and basic amenities.
Model I describes using reinforced concrete slab roofs instead of tin roofs, which would improve structural quality and drainage. Model II discusses using the RCC slab roofs for rainwater harvesting by collecting water in PVC pipes.
Model III proposes using rechargeable polymer beads for point-of-use water purification. The models aim to address issues like poor housing, water access, and sanitation that slum residents face. Architecture & IA: Expanding the Metaphor - IA Summit 2016

A leader in the movement, Eric Corey Freed, will take questions during the Q&A portion. The symposium aims to show how this movement uses the power of storytelling and online networks to drive positive change through design.
