Cable television started in 1949 to address poor broadcast television reception. It grew rapidly during the Reagan administration and subscriber numbers increased over 50% by the late 1980s. However, subscriber growth declined in the 1990s. By the 2000s, cable had evolved to offer additional digital services like high-speed internet, digital channels, video on demand and was transitioning to being the primary provider of television and internet services to most US households. However, cable began losing subscribers after 2000, though cable and satellite TV combined continued increasing subscribers each year.
