Obierika brings Okonkwo cowsries and they discuss current events with Uchenda. Uchenda tells a story from the past about mother Kite as Obierika informs them that the neighboring village of Abame was destroyed by white men. While the men shake hands and share stories according to cultural norms, conflicts are arising from the destruction caused by encounters with the white men. Uchenda is shown to be wise from his life experiences while Okonkwo appears thankful, but no one discusses taking action against the white men for now.
