Bystander awareness educates people about the bystander effect, where the presence of others discourages an individual from helping someone in need. The more people that are present, the less likely any one person will intervene to help a victim. However, people are more inclined to assist in an emergency when they are the only, or one of few, witnesses. Bystander awareness programs teach that not taking action signals acceptance of harmful acts, so it is important for bystanders to get involved and help those in need.
