Buzz Aldrin suffered from depression and alcoholism after returning from the moon due to being unprepared for the intense publicity. This led to his divorce and drinking large amounts of alcohol daily. He hit rock bottom and begged his fiancée Beverly for help, who threatened to end their relationship if he did not get treatment. Buzz then checked himself into alcohol rehab for 28 days, where he was treated by Dr. Max Schneider. After completing the program, Buzz was able to get his life back on track and find happiness again.

GRETCHEN: My name is Gretchen. And I've been in recovery for about three
years.
JASON: My name's Jason, and I've been in recovery for five months.
ODESSA: My name is Odessa, and I have been in recovery for six years.
SHANE: My name is Shane, and I have 11 years clean.
FEMALE SPEAKER: Six addicts, six remarkable stories of addiction, treatment,
and recovery in their own words.
GRETCHEN: My addictions are prescription pain pills and alcohol. I'm a survivor
of childhood sexual trauma, so that's-- and my parents are addicts. And my
parents always used around me. Their friends always used around me.
I grew up thinking that was normal. I grew up thinking chaos was normal and
negative type behaviors. My mother had breast cancer, and my mother has other
health issues. And she's addicted to her pain pills.
I would try and reach out to her for help, and she would just say, you know, go
get me a bottle or go get me a beer or go get this. And she would take those pain
pills with that alcohol. When you sit there and you watch your mother do that and
not help you and not support you and not listen to you, and the whole time I was
there I was telling her I needed to get help.
I needed help. I needed counseling. I needed treatment. I needed something.
In the worst stage of my addiction, I just kind of went off the deep end with it all. I
just realized that I couldn't handle it anymore and I didn't know how to fix it. So I
just self-medicated and drank, and drank, and drank, and took pills and drank.
And some things happened that just caused me to realize that I was going to die
if I didn't reach for help.
JASON: I snuck into a Casino with a fake ID at 14 and won $1,000 playing
Blackjack, and then it was like my whole life went this way. It was like college,
that all can wait, because there's no way I can make this much money. So it was
just off to the races from then.

I can remember one time I cashed out my 401k, took out like $30,000, went
straight to the casino. Doubled that and didn't leave. And then lost $40,000.
I think I got the same feeling losing or winning. It was as long as I was gambling.
It didn't matter. It's the same. It's the rush.
I would go to the casino. And, of course, they'd give me a room for a week or two
weeks, whatever I wanted. I would stay there literally. I just wouldn't go to work.
And of course, no employer's going to put up with that.
I pretty much just lost everything. And I knew it was time to do something.
RICKY: My daddy, when I finished high school, he passed away. So that just,
that left me, the oldest son, on the farm. So I had to drop everything. There was a
lot of pressure. There was a lot of disappointment, and the only way I could .

The following is a brief, highly incomplete case study of a fellow who presents with symptoms of a specific psychiatric illness. He is interviewed and given some IQ testing. IQ testing would not be the best test to understand his problems, in fact it might be contraindicated in his current state but for the purposes of the assignment, IQ testing provides the clearest example of data and its use in a critical thinking exercise which is one of the goals of this assignment.
CASE STUDY
Mr. A. Soprano is a 55-year-old white male who presented as an “emergency” to a psychologist at a local ER. After establishing rules of confidentiality he revealed he was a high level crime boss; essentially a mobster. Throughout the interview he spoke in a rather pronounced Brooklyn accent. He preferred to call himself “a highly creative business man.” The client’s chief complaint was a concern over a vague desire to “hurt” himself, sleep problems and was experiencing disturbing “thoughts that don’t make any sense.” He stated his thinking had become very negative, “and weighs heavy on me”, where he doesn’t see anything good or positive in his life, “and I’m normally a positive kinda guy.” Dr. Psychologist proceeded to request the client cooperate with psychological testing to help determine potential causes for the client’s reported problems. This included a clinical interview.
Mr. Soprano began his interview by telling a story about ordering a fellow mobster killed, “a couple months ago.” He said, “I liked the guy. He was my right hand man, but he screwed up Doc and coulda’ got me whacked so ahh, ya know, he had to go but I felt really bad about it. Hey ‘fergit’ about it, it was a business decision. Sometimes ya make those tough one’s but this one really bothered me ya know.” He stated he noticed in the days following, his thoughts would race and be dominated by feelings of guilt. In the last seven weeks, he went through periods of sleeping much more than normal or suffering from insomnia when he felt “stressed out and I don’t get stressed out, Doc. Normally I sleep like a baby.” He also related in the last month, he had been battling with the strong desire to stay home and “hibernate” and would struggle to fight the fatigue and loss of interest through these times “but I have a business to run. So I get out but most days I don’t wanna.” On the days where he simply couldn’t bring himself to leave home he said he sometimes hears voices telling him he is a “bad man” and deserves to die. He added he finds himself peering out the curtains fearing the cops will come arrest him at any moment. He added he’s noticed other changes that cause him concern, “I don’t know Doc, I used to really enjoy roughin’ people up a little. You know, gettin’ their attention, a busted finger or a knee, but here lately I don’t enjoy it so much.” He said these changes in his feelings, thoughts and behaviors had been going on for “a couple months.” When asked ...

admitted to the addictions facility. Please carefully read the paperwork
developed by a support staff member during Marge’s intake process earlier
today. Marge’s husband, Ken, was also briefly interviewed during this time.
After reviewing this information, click the “continue” button to begin Marge’s first
counseling session. Using your cursor, rollover buttons A and B to review your

drinking, and that he had brought her to the facility out of desperation.
• Patient has three children, ages 10, 12, and 16
• Patient was a teacher, but she lost job for alcohol-related reasons
• Patient had a one-car, alcohol-related accident three days earlier. She
received minor injuries and was issued a ticket for DUI. Husband, family
members, and friends determined that they needed to intervene to prevent
Marge from harming herself and/or others.
• An intervention occurred earlier today, culminating in her being brought for
treatment.
• Patient will go through a week of detoxification during her first week in
treatment to address the physical withdrawal from alcohol
[Opening scene: Marge’s admission into residential treatment. Her counselor is
meeting with her for the first time and is conducting Marge’s initial assessment.
Marge is disheveled, wears no makeup, and her eyes are red from crying. An
adhesive bandage is on her forehead, and she has a black eye and abrasions
from a one-car accident she had several days ago She was charged with driving
while under the influence, her first such charge.

Hi, and thanks for attending this case presentation. My name is Dr. Stephen Brewer and I am a licensed
clinical psychologist in San Diego, California and Assistant Professor of Psychology and Applied
Behavioral Sciences at Ashford University. Today, I will be sharing with you the story of Bob.
Presenting problem
Bob Smith is a 36-year-old man who came to me approximately six months ago with concerns about his
career choice and life direction. He did not have any significant psychiatric symptoms, besides some
understandable existential anxiety regarding his future. Bob was cooperative, friendly, open, and
knowledgeable about psychology during our first few sessions together. I noticed that he seemed
guarded only when talking about his family and childhood experiences. To confirm his identity, I checked
his driver’s license to ensure his name was indeed Bob Smith and that he lived close by in a mobile home
in Spring Valley. Given his relatively mild symptoms, we decided to meet once a week for supportive
psychotherapy so he could work through his anxieties. I gave him a diagnosis of adjustment disorder
with anxiety.
History
Here’s some background on Bob to give you a sense of who he is.
Family
Bob grew up as an only child in Edmonton, Canada, in a low-income, conservative, and very religious
household.
He shared that his father was largely absent during his childhood, as he spent most of the week residing
north of Edmonton, where he worked as a mechanic in the oil fields near Fort McMurray. On weekends,
Bob’s father would return home and spend as much time as possible with his family. Bob described his
father as warm, caring, and a hard worker. His father reportedly died one year ago.
Bob’s mother was described as a strict, rule-based woman who had a short temper and was prone to
furious outbursts over trivial matters. She worked in Bob’s junior high as a janitor, which meant that Bob
often crossed paths with his mother at school, where she would often check up on him. During Bob’s
high school years, Bob’s mother got a new job as a high school librarian.
At 18, Bob moved to San Diego to study psychology at San Diego State University. He lived in the dorms
for his first few years, where he easily made friends and joined a fraternity. Bob maintained contact with
his parents, but ceased all contact when his mother suggested she would move to San Diego to be closer
to him. He graduated with a 3.2 GPA and began working for the county as a psychiatric technician. He
worked as a psych tech for 14 years and described it as “fun at first, but it got boring and predictable
after a while.”
Treatment
Bob shared that he has a medical doctor that he visits once every few years for his routine physical. He
denied having any significant medical problems. Additionally, he denied using any illicit substances and
reported drinking only on occasion with friends from his fratern ...
Addicted to opioids

His fiancé Beverly was sick of it and told buzz to get rid of the alcohol he said no so she did it for him, Beverly got more and more annoyed and threatened to end the relationship Buzz begged for another chance and he went to Beverly's apartment so she could look after him that night Buzz finished a whole bottle of whiskey. For example someone I know hurt herself and broke something after being in hospital she had to go to rehab to recover from this incident and learn how to walk again.
