Elderly People: Increasingly, Abandoned by Their own Children
Ageing of the population is a global phenomenon; no country is untouched by it. A
population can be said to be ageing, when the proportion of the older people increases
as that of its youth and children.
India is going through some major technological, social, cultural and demographic
transition. Along with the growing number of the aged persons, the idea of joint family
system is fast disappearing from the Indian society. Various studies show that elderly
people are now facing many problems and they are one of the most vulnerable and
high-risk groups in terms of health and socio-economic status in the society today.
Elderly are the senior citizens of the nation leading their lives in a transitional phase.
The transition from middle to old age is a critical period when state of health and post
retirement finances sharply decreases.
These problems become more complicated when their children start ignoring them as
they become preoccupied with the running of their own individual lives. As a result,
elderly people face social problems along with the economic and health problems.

Unlike earlier times, when the presence of grandparents or any elderly relatives were
as considered as s blessing. Today’s reality is that children do not shy away from, in
some cases, even abandoning their parents and elders. Placing them in old age homes
or isolating them in their own homes has become commonplace.
Observing the gravity of the situation, various non-profit organizations have come
forward to help the senior citizens through various sponsored programs and initiatives.
They provide home support for those elderly people, who have been neglected by
their children and thus, living in isolation.
There is an urgent need for the young generation to recognize and understand that it is
because of their parents that they have been able to achieve so much in their life. The
blessing of our elders just cannot be ignored. Our parents have undergone a lot of trials
and tribulations to bring children to a level where they can stand on their feet. Now
more than ever, children should not leave them when the elders need the most.
