Business and its
Environment
Business which neglects its
environment maybe freed from its
responsibilities to society, but it is
imprisoned by its own parochial
thinking.
Culture is an assimilation of
traditions and patterns of life.
There is no development without
change and progress in the
organization.
 Development is only possible
when individuals interact with
their environment.
Culture and its effects on
the Organization
There are limitations in adapting
to environment.
One such limitation is culture.
“Behind all these things are the
experiences of people and the enduring
aspects of their culture. Culture is the
accumulation of ideas, beliefs and skills
that a group possesses. In other words,
its way of life.”

Value is a set of principles or
standards.
The Individual and the
Environment
“Environment refers to the people and
conditions external to the organizations
which affect and are affected by the
organization.”
-Edgar F. Huse and James L. Bowditch
The individual cannot be understood
part from his environment. – William
Scott & Terence Mitchell
While people develop their own
values, some of them avoid ethical
questions or remain neutral. Hence,
there is a need to develop standards
of right or wrong to guide them I the
conduct of their business affairs.
Factors affecting the
Environment
There are many factors that affect the
environment of an organization.
Counting them which are not visible is
difficult.
“There is no best way to approach the
problem of designing the organization
to fit the environment; rather, it must
be done recognizing the
contingencies with the environment.”
– Huse & Bowditch
Work Situation Characteristics are factors in
work environment of the individuals.
Do colleagues encourage low productivity?
Do supervisor reward high performance, or
do they ignore it? Does the organization
culture foster concern for members of the
organization – or does it encourage cold and
indifferent formality?
Work environment involves tools and
workplaces needed to maximize work
accomplishments and employees’
satisfaction.
The employee may accept those factors
affecting his environment for the value his
organization might give them. Thus, work
environment influences worker’s job
satisfaction.
“The fact that human behavior is a result of
both personal and environmental
characteristics means the changes in either
the personnel or the environment in which
they operate. Further, a manager seeking
to produce change must consider that,
because there is an interaction between the
person and the environment is likely to
produce changes in the individuals who
work in it.”

No organization exists in isolation. It
has to contribute interact with its
environment. Such interaction
operates within organized
environment patterns which stimulate
developments in the organization.
 In essence, management must control its
environment.
“Successful executives are people in
control. They are in control of their
environment and most important, of
themselves. A primary rule for staying in
control is that when everything begins to
slip and everything begins to get the better
of you, the wisest course of action is to
stop, or to say nothing until you once again
have control. Then proceed.”

This is a situation a manager could manage
if his organization kept pace with the
development in its environment, particularly
about himself.
“Always keep in mind that the person in
control stands the best chance of achieving
his goals. If you know you have a strong
and/or quick temper, begin to take action to
curb it. Otherwise you will never really be a
controller”

Business and its environment

  • 2. Business which neglects its environment maybe freed from its responsibilities to society, but it is imprisoned by its own parochial thinking.
  • 3. Culture is an assimilation of traditions and patterns of life.
  • 4. There is no development without change and progress in the organization.  Development is only possible when individuals interact with their environment.
  • 5. Culture and its effects on the Organization
  • 6. There are limitations in adapting to environment. One such limitation is culture.
  • 7. “Behind all these things are the experiences of people and the enduring aspects of their culture. Culture is the accumulation of ideas, beliefs and skills that a group possesses. In other words, its way of life.” -Filipino Author
  • 8. Value is a set of principles or standards.
  • 9. The Individual and the Environment
  • 10. “Environment refers to the people and conditions external to the organizations which affect and are affected by the organization.” -Edgar F. Huse and James L. Bowditch
  • 11. The individual cannot be understood part from his environment. – William Scott & Terence Mitchell
  • 12. While people develop their own values, some of them avoid ethical questions or remain neutral. Hence, there is a need to develop standards of right or wrong to guide them I the conduct of their business affairs.
  • 14. There are many factors that affect the environment of an organization. Counting them which are not visible is difficult. “There is no best way to approach the problem of designing the organization to fit the environment; rather, it must be done recognizing the contingencies with the environment.” – Huse & Bowditch
  • 15. Work Situation Characteristics are factors in work environment of the individuals. Do colleagues encourage low productivity? Do supervisor reward high performance, or do they ignore it? Does the organization culture foster concern for members of the organization – or does it encourage cold and indifferent formality?
  • 16. Work environment involves tools and workplaces needed to maximize work accomplishments and employees’ satisfaction. The employee may accept those factors affecting his environment for the value his organization might give them. Thus, work environment influences worker’s job satisfaction.
  • 17. “The fact that human behavior is a result of both personal and environmental characteristics means the changes in either the personnel or the environment in which they operate. Further, a manager seeking to produce change must consider that, because there is an interaction between the person and the environment is likely to produce changes in the individuals who work in it.” -Reitz
  • 18. No organization exists in isolation. It has to contribute interact with its environment. Such interaction operates within organized environment patterns which stimulate developments in the organization.
  • 19.  In essence, management must control its environment. “Successful executives are people in control. They are in control of their environment and most important, of themselves. A primary rule for staying in control is that when everything begins to slip and everything begins to get the better of you, the wisest course of action is to stop, or to say nothing until you once again have control. Then proceed.” –Glendon Powell
  • 20. This is a situation a manager could manage if his organization kept pace with the development in its environment, particularly about himself.
  • 21. “Always keep in mind that the person in control stands the best chance of achieving his goals. If you know you have a strong and/or quick temper, begin to take action to curb it. Otherwise you will never really be a controller” -Powell
