Trompennaar’s Model of Culture
Fons Trompenaar believed in cultures that distinguish
themselves by the specific solutions to problems. The problems
or dilemmas can be categorized under three headings: (1) those
that come from relationships, (2) those that come from the
passing of time and (3) those that come from the environment.
Trompenaar identified seven dimensions of culture that are as
followed:
1. Universalism vs. Particularism 2.
Individualist vs. Communitarian
3. Specific vs. Diffuse 4. Affective
vs. Neutral
5. Achievement vs. Ascription 6. Sequential
vs. Synchronic
7. Internal vs. External
After reading the section, an interpretation and
correlation can be made between each set of dimension that can
best be described as the differences between the political
parties. For example, as a general assumption, those who lean
more toward the Democratic Party are the typically
universalistic in that rules, codes and values apply to everyone
equally. Secondly, these individuals fit into the communitarian
culture as they place the community before individuals. In the
specific culture, the public sphere is much larger than the
private. Affective culture people do not hide feelings. Ascribed
status refers to what a person is and how their position relates
to the community. As person with an externalistic dimension of
culture, one would have a more organic view of the environment
or that mankind should operate in harmony with nature.
Whereas those from the Republican Party are typically
particularistic in culture in that they focus more on
extraordinary achievement and situations are more important.
They are individualist in that they believe in taking care of
one’s self and that the community will follow. As diffused
individuals, large private spheres and small public are more
common. In neutral cultures people do not display emotions. An
achieved status refers to what an individual does and has
accomplished. People react to the environment according to the
control they have in their own lives. As an internalistic person,
there is a view of the environment as a machine that can be
controlled with the right expertise.
“Culture is a shared system of meanings. It dictates
what we pay attention to, how we act and what we value. Each
of us carries within us the ways we have learnt of organizing
our experience to mean something. This approach is described
as phenomenological, meaning that the way people perceive a
phenomenon around them is coherent, orderly and makes sense.
A fellow employee from a different culture makes one
interpretation of the meaning of an organization while we make
our own. This approach to understanding an international
organization is in strong contrast to the traditional approach, in
which managers or researchers decide unilaterally how the
organization should be defined. Traditional studies have been
based on the physical, verifiable characteristics of
organizations, which are assumed to have a common definition
for all people, everywhere, at all times. Instead of this
approach, which looks for laws and common properties among
"things" observed, we shall look for consistent ways in which
cultures structure the perceptions of what they experience”
(Trompenaars, 1997).
