community

 The biggest hit: our

county in 2012 was only

4. Community Diagnosis One
 Montgomery County and its Burtonsville residents are at
risk for poor health status related to excessively high
rates of lack of health insurance as evidenced by 11.9% of
the resident lack any health insurance.
 Healthy People 2020 list Access to Care as leading health
indicator and consider it a top priority of communities
 According to Healthy Montgomery…
 The target for the county is for 0% to be without health
insurance

5. Recommendations
 Develop a program through the Montgomery County
Health Department that assists residents in signing up
for health insurance through HealthCare.gov for free.
 No appointment necessary
 In the few months prior to open enrollment, posters
should be displayed in all local public buildings, such
as libraries, county offices, and jails, explaining the
available service and expected federal tax penalties for
being uninsured.
 Grassroots – have the consumers help spread the
word
 Nearby Healthy Howard can be used as a model

 Our region is still considered a
non-attainment area by the EPA
 Improvements have been made
but our residents are still being
affected
 According to the EPA, ground-
level ozone is known to cause
airway irritation, as well as,
worsen lung conditions like
asthma and COPD (Environmental
Protection Agency, 2014)
 Chronic lung disease is the 4th
leading cause of death (DHMH
Maryland Vital Statistics Annual Report,
2013)

7. Community Diagnosis
Two
 Inhabitants of Burtonsville, Maryland are at risk for
chronic lung disease deaths related to elevated
levels of ground-level ozone, as evidenced by
designation of the Washington Region as a
nonattainment area for its ozone levels, declaration
by the EPA that ozone aggravates lung conditions,
and chronic lung disease being the number four
cause of death in Montgomery County.
 Environmental quality is one of Healthy People
2020’s leading health indicators

8. Recommendations
 Reduce ozone and improve community awareness
and understanding of its health hazards and how
to reduce exposure.
 The already developed State Improvement Plan
 Educate the community
 Effects of ozone,
 Who is at highest risk and how to reduce risk
 How to understand the air quality index
 Pamphlets could be dispersed to children through
their schools, posters could be hung at the P&R bus
stops and public service announcement could be
broadcasted as well.
 Encourage those at highest risk to due existing lung
conditions and/or prolonged outdoor activities, to
sign up for the EPA’s air quality application that
sends email or phone alerts regarding local air
quality warnings http://www.enviroflash.info/

11. Community Diagnosis
Three
 In Montgomery County, Maryland the infants of
young, Black, and/or Hispanic mothers are at risk
for LBW related to late or no prenatal care as
evidenced by the statistic previously shown.
 Maternal, infant, and child health is considered a
leading health indicator by Healthy People 2020.

12. Recommendations
 Improve access to care and promote prenatal care
education amongst the youth
 Improve access to care by
 Improving access to health insurance via recommendations
of diagnosis one
 Create a referral service with local providers who do not
accept Medicaid or do not provide sliding scale fees
 They can send patients to local health departments and
providers that do
 Work with local schools to include the importance of
prenatal care in their sex education and health classes.
 Burtonsville has a majority Black population so its
important to target this community
