• BIS was functioning under Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food
and Public Distribution, Govt of India as a statutory body under
BIS Act, 1986 with effect from 1st April 1987
• BIS is the National standards body of India established under the
BIS Act 2016 notified on 22nd March, 2016, which had been brought
into force with effect from 12th October, 2017
