A 15-year-old girl in Manabí, Ecuador was severely bullied by her classmates for being overweight. They constantly called her hurtful names and insulted her appearance, which took a psychological toll and led her to ask to change schools and consider plastic surgery. Studies show that 6 in 10 students suffer from bullying in Ecuador, and 64% of students ages 8 to 17 reported being in at least one fight while 57% destroyed others' property and 69% bullied younger students. Although bullying was once viewed as normal childhood behavior, it is now recognized as a social problem and people are less tolerant of abuse.
