Salutations Class! In our personal and professional lives, we all have perceptions which drive our behaviors. Whether we like to admit it or not, we all have both positive and negative perceptions of various things (people, tasks, events). Understanding what’s behind those perceptions will allow you to evaluate, understand, and better appreciate happenings around you.
A perception, academically defined in the text on page 121 by Hitt, Miller, and Colella, is the process of sensing various aspects of a person, task, or event and forming impressions based on selected inputs. Within the slide presentation this week, we reviewed the three stages of perception which included sensing, selecting, and organizing. During this lecture, we’ll focus in on what the text calls “Problems in Person Perception”.
We’ll cover four specific terms and give you a bit more insight into each one. Noted below are each topic, how the Hitt, Miller, and Colella text defines each one on page 125, and some specific examples to help you identify each in practice.
Implicit person theories – defined as “personal theories about what personality traits and abilities occur together and how these attributes are manifested in behavior.” An example of this recently surfaced in the workplace. Here’s the scenario…a leader recently had his door shut for the majority of the day for the last couple of weeks. His secretary senses that his door being closed is a reflection of how he feels about her. In other words, subconsciously believes that physical separation and dislike are coupled together. The problem with this is that the leader had his door shut for very valid reasons. He was coordinating an entangled web with human resources and the legal department to terminate an employee for poor performance. How could this problem in person perception be avoided? What could be done the next time around to prevent this misunderstanding?
Halo effect – defined as “a perception problem in which an individual assesses a person positively or negatively in all situations based on an existing general assessment of the person.” Let’s use the all too popular example of a politician on the national level…how about a longstanding member of Congress who has cheated on his tax returns and is facing tax evasion charges. Many folks would generally see that Senator or Congressman as an all-around bad person regardless of any good that individual has done in his or her community.
Projecting – defined as “a perception problem in which an individual assumes that others share his or her values and beliefs.” For this concept, let’s take the manager who values bonuses in the form of money as a motivational tool. The manager’s employees, however, have varied beliefs. Some prefer money but many prefer paid time off to spend with their respective families. Managing a diverse team
Think about a great manager who's really motivated you in the past. What comes to mind? Many people describe such managers as fair, respectful, encouraging, objective, clear, and good listeners. The key in a diverse work environment is to be this way with everyone, and not only with the employees you feel comfortable with. Managing a diverse team requires a commitment to demonstrate these kinds of behaviors with everyone on the team.
The more you can really connect with each of your team members, the more you'll be able to create a highly productive environment. Once you've established your initial approach to managing diversity by building diversity awareness in yourself and your team, you need to use different techniques to maintain the approach. The techniques for managing a diverse team are to communicate inclusively, consider individual needs, delegate fairly, and evaluate objectively.
Communicating inclusively
The first technique, communicating inclusively, means being careful that your language doesn't make anyone feel marginalized. All team members should feel comfortable and know their contributions matter. And listening is one of the most important communication skills. Listen actively to what team members have to say to be sure you understand what they're trying to communicate. You also have to be clear when you communicate. Especially in diverse environments, you need to check to make sure all team members understand you.
In addition to listening well and being clear, to communicate inclusively you can use two specific techniques:
1. be open – share all appropriate information, recognize and accept differences, change, and new ways of doing things, and respond honestly
2. use inclusive language – call people by their preferred names, avoid stereotypes, and avoid using metaphors that may exclude someone
Do you know the background of each of your team members? Demonstrating an open and flexible mind is easier when you know who you're communicating with. Remember that communication is a two-way process, and every team member has had experiences that have shaped their views, opinions, and biases. You also have opinions and biases. So you'll need to adjust your language in a way that helps all your employees feel like part of the communication process, especially when they come from backgrounds different from your own.
Because language is powerful, you need to be careful you don't use language that makes others feel excluded. Inclusive language is nonsexist and nonracist. Some people think using "politically correct" phrasing is a trivial matter, but words can shape people's realities. Not many little girls grow up wanting to be a "chairman." But children of either gender can see themselves as a "chairperson."
You can use more inclusive language in several different areas:

We must understand what an individual’s actions
or reactions will look like so we do not ask them
to do something that may not utilize their
strongest skills or provide others with the ―wrong
impression.‖
We must identify which of their actions/reactions
will be dominant and how that will impact their
direction.
We must also have a clear appreciation for how
those actions/reactions will impact others in the
ministry as well as those considering Christianity.
12. If the model is to work we must clarify Paul’s
inference of boskō about MOTIVATING:
We must understand that each individual’s
motivations are different. They may share a
common goal (reaching and ministering to
others), but may want to get there on a different
path.
We must identify which of those motivations are
strongest and how that impacts their approach.
We must also have a clear appreciation for how
those motivations will impact others in the
ministry as well as those considering Christianity.
13. If the model is to work we must clarify Paul’s
inference of boskō about empowering:
We must understand what skill sets they will
rely on so we can direct the use of their
assets to assist us in reaching our goals.
We must identify which skill sets will be
dominant to insure their ―gifting‖ produces
the greatest results for the Kingdom.
We must also have a clear appreciation for
how those skill sets will impact others in the
ministry as well as enable the spread of our
mission.
14. If boskō means to ―promote (in every way) the
welfare of those they lead,‖ here is our formula
for success:
Direct an individual by using their natural
behaviors for works that provide enjoyment
and fulfillment, not subject them to undo stress
or burnout.
Motivate an individual by training and
rewarding them based on what they value the
most.
Empower an individual by appointing and
enabling them to use the skill sets and gifting
God has designed uniquely for them.
15. In the pastoral epistles (Titus 2) the NIV titles
the chapter ―What must be taught to the
various groups”
The word ―teach‖ (teaching, teaches) is used 8
times. The Greek word sōphronizō
communicates bringing a person to his/her
senses and duties through
discipleship, admonishing and exhorting with
―earnestness.‖
It comes from the Greek word sōphrōn which
indicates that you curb an individual’s impulses
by understanding their natural senses. In
today’s language you must consider their
behaviors, attitudes and motivations.
16. You must teach what is in accord with sound doctrine. Teach
the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-
controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in
endurance. Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent
in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to
much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can train
the younger women to love their husbands and children, to
be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind,
and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will
malign the word of God. Similarly, encourage the young men
to be self-controlled. In everything set them an example by
doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity,
seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be
condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed
because they have nothing bad to say about us.
