However a key problem of software development often still occurs which is the challenge of rapid deployments in different environments development, testing and production and both on-premises and cloud. The typical developers excuse it works for me doesn’t count anymore. Instead today developers are responsible for the complete development cycle up to the deployment and testing in production environments. Fortunately Docker addresses this challenge and makes it very easy to deploy applications in different environments. This empowers developers and allows them to be really innovative by focussing on writing code to go from concept to production in minutes rather than months. In this session we are going to use the Cloud Foundry implementation IBM Bluemix to get applications deployed to the cloud by leveraging the power and portability of Docker containers. Well talk about everything from build pipelines, to private registries, container monitoring and more.

A while ago, I started a project that looked obvious at first. We had to build an IoT system to send messages from devices to the cloud for processing and show everything on a web dashboard. Sounds basic, right? I thought so, too.There was one "little" requirement that took the whole architecture to the ultimate test: It should be able to scale, in a relatively short period of time, to handle bursts of 300K messages/sec. We designed and implemeted the system with the performance requirements in mind, but we had to prove that it actually works.Join me to learn what we learnt from spending 25K$ on testing, to make sure that the designed architecture can withstand the crazy rate of 300K messages per second in a totally serverless system.

Who needs containers in a serverless world

With the rise of Docker, we have seen an unprecedented interest in container technologies where small companies and big enterprises bet their future on these technologies. This trend bases on an immense adoption of containers from software developers. And it has been agreed upon that they are considered highly beneficial for modern engineering practices like Agile and DevOps. But there is a new kid in town that proclaims a more radical approach: Serverless or FaaS: Function-As-A-Service. This paradigm suggests that a developer should only write functions and react to events. The functions are written in high-level programming languages like Javascript, Java or Python, and the underlying compute infrastructure like containers or VMs is transparent to the user. That raises the question: Is the container revolution already dead before it really started? And who now needs container technologies in a serverless world? In this talk we discuss these questions from both a containers advocate and serverless fanboy viewpoints. We confront these two approaches, show the differences, individual strengths and weaknesses and where they complement each other. Well, I introduce the new cloud stack: Kubernetes, Istio and Knative that are totally open source. So, in this talk I will introduce the newest member of the team, the Knative! Which brings the serverless feature in our architecture, using Istio to route traffic between versioned functions, among other characteristics that I will demonstrate during the course of the lecture.

Cloud-native architectures shift the complexity from within an application to orchestrations of Microservices. Both Kubernetes and Serverless have their strengths which we will discuss. First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User Endpoints

In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.
