- Generally a work/asset management system is complex software. An implementation and training that takes place over the phone can leave you clueless. You don’t have an opportunity to work through issues and ask the right questions. The person on the other end does not see the vacant stares of the trainees. My first day at MG kick-off had already began for CG implementation. I was very green! Without knowledge on how things have always been done, I could not properly assign roles within the system and drive the customization of the software. The software was designed as one-size fits all, and makes general assumptions about the roles within a PW organization. Trying to fit your organization into that mold, rather than expanding upon the configurable software to fit your needs is a recipe for disaster. Once you have invested in the software, hardware, implementation services and staff, don’t fall short on technology. Get the devices you need to fully utilize the software.
- 1. Streets, utilities, and parks all get work done differently, so why are all of our meetings together? Hold separate meeting and talk about how each group deals with issues to get work done. 2. Let’s not talk about Cartegraph, explain to me how we are getting work done today. 3. Look for ways to integrate Cartegraph without disrupting current workflow. Rather than make whole-sale changes, try to improve upon existing methods.
- Tim already managing signs in OMS, and is comfortable with CG workflow. Easy to work with someone excited about asset management, to build our first app. Tim had the ability to get buy-in from the guys. The assumption was that streetlights is likely our worst asset. The extent of the problem and location of issues was completely unknown. When a pole is knocked down it can take a very long time to replace.
