Buddhism originated in 6th century BCE India and shares some similarities with Jainism but differs in its focus on the middle way instead of asceticism. It was founded by Siddhartha Gautama who achieved enlightenment and came to be known as the Buddha. The core teachings of Buddhism are the Four Noble Truths about suffering and its causes, and the Eightfold Path to end suffering. Buddhism spread from India to other countries and various sects developed over time with different philosophical approaches.
