This will come from my experience in the practical application.I have installed, managed, and had technical input on 100’s of water resources projects for over 15 years. Projects ranging from $1000 to ~ $10 million. WI, IL, MN, IN, KS, MO, CO, NY….If you want to have a discussion on flow calculations or soild chemistry, this is not the place to have it.

  5. Where it all startsUnderstand the design intentWhat are you managing for
  6. Suburban lake county is different the a thrift store parking lot off of Cicero ave, yet the same types of BMPs have been applied to both settingsYou may not even have a space for this type of BMP… if you don’t, don’t use a green approach.
  7. Right type… wrong sizeOrWrong type for the sizeWe can’t “Overwork” our BMPs and expect them to function
  8. What material are you going to work withWhat is the area you are going to work with… this needs to match
  9. If soil is not the right type (Clay) and won’t perk / infiltrateOr prohibits drainage due to size constraint (No space to build BMP… highly urban)Could: Turn into a pondBlow out the sidesLeach out like teaConsider using different recipies (mostly sand vs higher compost or organics

  12. Has the contractor built a BMP you are specifying beforeIs it just the “seller” or has the crew done it in the past. How many, what size, what scale, where. They can still demonstrate this with an interview process.On the one hand, Do they understand the intent or are they going to just “build to spec”.On the other hand, What is the owners / owners rep experience in it. (for municipalities hiring an engineering firm)
  13. This is a killerYou compact, you will get no perk, you will get a pond.You can’t blame the plants for standing water!!!!Separate contractor for excavation vs planting and maintaining BMP… we will get to this in the next section.
  14. Separate out the General construction and the BMP contractEnsure it does not get “Lost in the shuffle”Will have specific language for the installation of the BMPGC will not get “Stuck” managing a smaller part of the project… or will not dismiss that part of the project.Have the same contract docs but phase the BMP install until most or all the General Construction is complete.
  15. Describe the activities of a construction site.Open construction sites can be a mess. If we build the BMP along with the rest of construction it will fill up with sediment and other construction runoff that will doom the BMP project to failure.Have the BMP install phased until after construction is substantially completeHave establish by pass of BMP to handle construction runoff and “Go live” after most is completedOwners and owners reps will have a tendency to (at no fault of their own) to manage the big dollars!Vegetation establishment before going online“WATER MY RAINGARDEN.. WHAT????”
  16. If you go through the effort of installing it.. Try to make sure we can keep it.
  17. Big bucks go to the install of everything… maintenance gets lost in translation.May need to think about not even doing some of these BMPs if there is not thought about it afterwards.

  23. There had been no rain for weeks.
  24. South Milwaukee School AES was hired by the South Milwaukee School District to prepare a master landscape plan–including an ecological restoration plan and a planting plan–for the South Milwaukee Middle School and High School Campus. AES was also retained to complete the installation of all the native plants on site. The project site includes property owned by the South Milwaukee School District and property leased by the district from Milwaukee County. The campus includes a new high school adjacent to the existing high school, as well as additional parking lots, athletic fields, a football stadium and tennis courts. The site is unique because a state endangered perennial–bluestem goldenrod (Solidagocaesia)–as well as the state threatened Butler’s gartersnake (Thamnophisbutleri) are known to exist at the site. These two species populations directly affected development plans for the site. AES ecologists worked with the DNR and the school district to develop a Stormwater Treatment Train™ stormwater management system and restoration plans for the site as well as the adjacent Rawson Woods, a high-quality woodland. The design team at AES worked to develop a planting plan that would compliment the new architecture of the school building while providing an aesthetically pleasing landscape interest throughout the year. AES completed all installation and continues to do maintenance, monitoring, and outreach today. In 2006, this project received the EPA’s Conservation & Native Landscaping Award.
