Personal Statement
I am a Post-Graduate in Philosophy, English and Classics with 2 years Supervisory experience
working in the high-end book retail market and 8 years experience working in the second-hand
DVD/Book market. I possess excellent written and spoken English, strong communication skills
and a keen eye for detail, along with good computer skills and numeracy. I have good
interpersonal skills and a creative yet analytical mind and am able to approach projects/problems
from numerous, diverse directions. I am comfortable being responsible for staff and discharging
my duties in a fast-paced environment. I have written online extensively on film and am
comfortable using WordPress and all social media.
Work Experience
May 2016 — Temp. Exam Officer at CIOT
Employed by The Chartered Institute of Taxation as an invigilator and exam officer. This
involved invigilating (and reading/scribing for a special needs student) the exams administrative
tasks in compiling the completed scripts and then preparing them to be sent out to the external
examiners.
August 2015 – present — Proofreader at Enago
Employed by Enago, part of Crimson Interactive, proofreading academic papers using Microsoft
Word 2013 and traditional proofreading techniques, fulfilling assignments for private clients and
Universities across Asia, Europe and the UK.
November 2015 — Exam Script Checker at CIOT
Employed by The Chartered Institute of Taxation, responsible for administrative tasks during and
after their exam period.
April – May 2015 — Exam Invigilator at Into University (Temp.)
Employed as Head Exam Invigilator, responsible for examination invigilation, administration and
communicating with the Academic Support Team.
March 2015 — Customer Services Adviser at Moonpig (Temp.)
My duties in this role were:
• Responding to various customer queries using bespoke Customer Management software
linked to various Back Office applications, Right Now communications logging software
and various Office Suites.
September 2013 – January 2015 — Assistant HOD (Music, Drama, Film) at Foyles
Employed by W & G Foyle at their flagship bookshop on Charing Cross Road, first as a
bookseller and later as Assistant Head of the Music, Film and Drama Department. My duties in
this role were:
• Management of the entire Department in the absence of the Department Head
• Meeting and greeting customers, attending launches and meeting publishing reps
• Updating and maintaining customer databases on Booksolve, Groupwise & Excel
• Monitoring and reordering of stock (replenishment & subscriptions), stock turn and gross
margins using Booksolve, PubEasy and Microsoft Office
• Proofreading and typing documents for internal and external distribution
• Merchandising - preparing promotions, range maintenance and additions
May 2005 – 2013 — Senior Buyer at Music and Goods Exchange
I worked as a buyer in the Stage and Screen film and film memorabilia shop and as a buyer in the
Book and Comic Exchange. My duties in both of these roles included:
• General management of both shops. This includes customer service, cash handling, and
generally keeping both shops well stocked and maintained.
• Grading, Pricing, Purchasing and selling stock
Education.
2012 — Publishing Training Centre, London
Obtained a diploma in Basic Proofreading and Copy-Editing, covering all aspects of
proofreading, copy-editing and typesetting.
2003 — Rhodes University, Grahamstown
I read Philosophy for an Honours Degree, and was admitted to the Degree of Bachelor of Arts
with Honours in April 2004. My final dissertation was on the Philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche.
1999 – 2002 — Rhodes University, Grahamstown
Degree of Bachelor of Arts, which was awarded in April 2003, with three major subjects:
Philosophy, English Literature, and Classical Civilisations.
1997 – 1999 — Intec College South Africa
I studied by correspondence towards a Diploma in Creative Writing and Journalism.
I was awarded the Diploma in January 1999.
