Brotherhood
Opening sequence
Brotherhood 2016
• Cast – Noel Clarke, Fady Elsayed, David Ajala
• Lionsgate
• The primary target audience was men from ages
16-25 however the secondary target audience
was people aged 16-25.The film would be
directed towards people living in London as they
are most able to relate.
Narrative
• The opening sequence followed a linear
narrative
• The opening sequence contains a number of
binary oppositions such as (good vs. ad, and rich
vs. poor)
• The enigma code was used very well as we see
one of the characters get shot at the end of the
opening sequence which helped to create a sense
of thrill and mystery for the audience that will
entice them to keep watching
Some of the characters involved in
the opening sequence are the gang
members. We can come to this
conclusion as we see them dressed
in all lack and they are also seen
committing a crime in the opening
sequence as they are responsible
for the shooting.
Other characters that we saw appear in
the opening sequence were the band
members. They appear to e quite
wealthy and formal than the other
characters that we see, this is due to the
music that we hear them play and the
way they dress. These things connote
these attributes as this is how we wound
think they would act conventionally
Media Language
• In the opening sequence we experience non-
diegetic sound.
• We here music playing both rap/grime and
subtle pop music
• The contrast between the rap and pop helps to
emphasise the difference between characters
• By having rap music being played helps to set up
the main plot lines in the film as we would
normally associate gangs and gang violence with
rap and grim music
In the opening sequence there
tends to be a majority use of
low-key lighting in order to
create that effect of it being in
the night but also to signify
darkness within the themes of
the movie, such as crime and
gang violence.
They use lighting to show contrast between two clubs the one on the left is has rap and
grime music playing so they use low-key lighting in order to convey evil and darkness
within that club where as the club on the left is more lit then the club on the right as it
isn't attracting the same sort or crowd as the other and the music is less violent
The difference in costume shows the difference in character the characters on the left are
more sophisticated and higher classed this is shown through the fact that they are
wearing suits. The characters on the right are not as sophisticated as the ones on the left,
this is represented through the costumes they are wearing. Hoodies are normally
associated with trouble makers and gangsters.
Props such as guns and knives will
be essential in order to establish the
main themes of the films by using
these kind of props helps to notify
the audience that the film is a crime
drama.
They used a birds eye view shot in
order to show the audience the
quantity of people in one area. This
shot is used to convey to the
audience the large amount of
people that attend these raves.
By using this close up at this angle combined with
the lighting helps to create then effect of shadow
which could connote a sense of the character being
two faced or having a split personality as he seems
to know some of the gang members.
This medium close up helps to
capture both the prop and the
expression in the characters face at
this moment just as he is about to
shoot someone
Representation
• Gangs in London are being represented in this
opening sequence which seems to come across as
very negative due to the fact that it portrays gang
violence
• Media language is used to establish the
representation of gangs by using props such as guns
which is normally associated with gangs which
makes it a very conventional representation
• The film is targeted mainly to people that live in
London so by portraying gang life in London the
audience will be able to relate to it.
• The ideologies suggested in the opening
sequence are that London is filled with gangs
and gang violence and that young people are
dying due to the presents of gangs.
• I feel like this is a fair representation of gangs in
London as this is what actually occurs in day to
day life and many young people are dying and
are being killed to their involvement in gangs.
