Ruukki announced an offer to acquire Chromex Mining for £37.1 million in cash. The acquisition would vertically integrate Ruukki's South African business, increase production capacity, and expand Ruukki's market share. Chromex provides chrome ore, a critical building block for Ruukki's processing growth plans over the medium term. Ruukki examined building furnaces at Chromex's mine to increase ferrochrome production capacity.

1. In September 2010, Ruukki announced a

3. EWW is a German-based smelting company which has a long-term
toll manufacturing agreement with Ruukki. The company sources
its high-grade chrome ore from Ruukki’s Turkish operation, TMS.
EWW produces low carbon, ultra-low carbon and specialty low
carbon ferrochrome, for use in the manufacture of highly
specialised products. Ruukki has captured a significant segment of
the global market for these products as the Group is often the
only supplier of particular alloys developed with individual
customers for their specific business needs. Current production
capacity is approximately 30,000 metric tonnes per annum.

4. Located in Turkey, TMS produces high-grade chrome concentrate and
lumpy ore, providing Ruukki with high-quality chrome concentrate
for processing by its European minerals processing business. Excess
concentrate and ore is sold by RCS directly to third parties.
The ore mined by TMS is low in phosphor and sulphur, making it
ideal for smelting. It also contains a favourable ratio of chrome to
iron, lending itself to the production of specialised stainless steel
products. Annual production capacity is around 120,000 metric
tonnes.
