BASIC PARTS
1. PREPARATION
a. Wash hands with soap and water. Pat dry.
b. Check insulin for
 Name and expiry date
 Appearance-
o If clumps present then DISCARD
o Roll between hands 5-6 times. DO NOT SHAKE!
INSULIN SYRINGE
Different types of Insulin syringes are available to
accommodate your prescribed dose
a. Wipe vial cover top with an alcohol swab. DO NOT
BLOW!
b. Take the cap of the needle. DO NOT TOUCH THE
NEEDLE!
c. Pull back the plunger to let air into syringe equal to
the dose of insulin.
d. Inject the air into the insulin vial

e. DON’T remove the needle and invert the vial
f. Fill the syringe with required insulin dose
g. If air bubbles present tap the syringe, bubbles will
float to the top. Push bubble back into insulin vial,
then pull back to get the right dose and withdraw
the needle
PEN
a. If the insulin is cloudy, gently invert 10 times and
roll between palms of hands 10 times to fully mix
b. Place a new needle onto your pen device and
screw firmly into place, but do not over tighten.

c. PRIME THE PEN: Set the dial to 2 units and with the
needle tip pointing away from you but still visible press
the dose button. Check for a bead of insulin at the
needle tip. Repeat if no insulin appears
d. Uncap the pen, attach a pen needle, then dial up
your dose

2. SITE SELECTION
a. See the image
b. 1 inch away from scars and 2 inch away from
navel
c. DO NOT inject at bruised, swollen or tender
areas
d. Clean and dry area with soap and water
preferably or alcohol swab.
3. ADMINISTRATION
a. Pinching technique: Take up skin and
subcutaneous tissue only, leaving muscle
behind
b. INSULIN SYRINGE: Pinch skin and insert needle
at 90 degree angle (only use insulin syringe)
c. PEN: Push down the dose button with your
thumb. Hold the needle in the injection site for
a full 10 seconds. Gently remove the needle
from the skin
PEN (90 degree angle) SYRINGE (90 degree angle)
Discard the needle safely. DO NOT RECAP!
4. STORAGE
Store the Insulin vial as recommended in the label
5. CAUTION
 Never mix two type of Insulin in one syringe
 Site rotation
 Check injection site for any reaction or
inflammation
 Bring the vial to room temperature prior to
administration
 Never share a Pen or Syringe between patients
 Always use Insulin syringe which is
recommended by your doctor/ pharmacist
